"WSJ finds students consulted with and received training from groups that have supported Hamas and attacks on Israel; NYT finds pro-Israel protesters started clash at UCLA"
U.S. #drones are failing to perform, The #WSJ reports.
Hoping to attract business, U.S. #startups have provided Ukrainian forces with drones. The drones have proven to be high in cost and low quality pushing Ukraine to turn to Chinese products.
"The Wall Street Journal poll appears to contain bad news for President Biden in the swing states, with Trump leading Biden on the economy, inflation, and immigration. The cable news talking heads went into overdrive about how this is all terrible news for the incumbent, and horserace, horserace, horserace..."
#US / Concerns Intelligence Information Provided to Israel
Contributes to the Unprecedented Killing of Civilians in Gaza
A secret memorandum has expanded intelligence sharing between the U.S. and Israel after a #Hamas attack in October, leading to concerns in Washington about potential contributions to civilian deaths.
There is little independent oversight to confirm that U.S.-supplied intelligence isn't used in strikes that unnecessarily kill civilians or damage infrastructure.
Democratic lawmakers and human-rights groups have raised questions, with over 32,000 Gazan deaths (mostly women and children) and substantial destruction of civilian infrastructure.
Rep. Jason Crow (D., Colo.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, is worried that shared intelligence isn't advancing U.S. interests.
[...] “What I’m concerned about is making sure our intelligence sharing is consistent with our values and our national-security interests,”
[...] Crow said he met separately with a senior Israeli military figure and U.S. intelligence officials and said there were “some pretty big inconsistencies” in the two sides’ accounts of the civilian toll.
#Gaza / Israelis Craft Secret Plan to Put Anti-Hamas Palestinians in Charge of Gaza Aid
Postwar reconstruction as a business model…
Netanyahu is opposing such a plan, allegedly
[…] The aid would enter by land and sea after Israeli inspection and would head to large warehouses in central Gaza, where Palestinians would then distribute it, the officials said. When the war is over, the people in charge of aid would assume authority to govern, backed up by security forces funded by wealthy Arab governments, the officials said.
Every so often an old Wall Street Journal article from 90s on anime makes rounds online again and gets dunked on, yet again. Oldtakus @twwk & @KhakiBlueSocks re-read the article and wrote a joint retrospective piece on it and 90s anime entitled, "Mechanized Monsters, Poké-Pulp Fiction, and Advancing Attitudes About Anime."

#UN / Intelligence report says Washington can’t verify Israeli assertions about widespread links to militant groups
Who could see this coming? At the rate IDF claims are being refuted, couple of days or a little bit longer after the initial claims are published, everything Israel is claiming needs to be double checked.
[…] The new intelligence assessment, as described by the officials, doesn’t dispute Israel’s allegations of links between some staff at Unrwa and militant groups, but it provides a more measured appraisal of Israel’s assertions than public statements by U.S. and Israeli officials.
[…] In the new report, which was completed last week, the U.S.’s National Intelligence Council, a group of veteran intelligence analysts, said it assessed with “low confidence” that a handful of Unrwa staffers participated in the Oct. 7 attack, those familiar with the findings said.
[…] The report also notes what it says is Israel’s longstanding dislike of the U.N. agency, two of those familiar with the document said.
[…] “There is a specific section that mentions how Israeli bias serves to mischaracterize much of their assessments on Unrwa and says this has resulted in distortions,” one person familiar with the report said.
The U.S. assessment also says that the reality of Hamas’ control in Gaza means that the U.N. agency has to interact with the group to deliver humanitarian relief, but that that doesn’t mean that the agency is collaborating with the militant group, the person said.
#IsraelUSAHamasWar / US Plans to Send Weapons to Israel Amid Biden Push for Cease-Fire Deal
Delivery would include bombs, precision-guidance kits and bomb fuses
[…] An assessment of the proposed arms transfer drafted by the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, and viewed by The Wall Street Journal, said the Israeli government requested “rapid acquisition of these items for the defense of Israel against continued and emerging regional threats.”
[…] The assessment said there were no potential human rights concerns with the sale. “Israel takes effective action to prevent gross violations of human rights and to hold security forces responsible that violate those rights. In the past, Israel has been a transparent partner in U.S. investigations into allegations of defense article misuse,” the assessment says.
@DrALJONES
Thx for sharing. Great discussion between 2 legit journalists whom I would not expect to see together.
Leftist, anti-imperial Chris Hedges speaks with former #WSJ, #NYTimes, & Forbes journalist Gretchen Morgenson. Despite seeming like an unlikely pair, they have much in common: decades of real reporting. (Hedges was a war reporter for the NYT.)
They find lots of common ground based on their experiences, and they have much to say about the current state of #journalism.
Israel began bombing Rafah about 4 hours ago and casualties of at least 63 - who knows how many by morning. I just saw ppl shroud a dead baby. @palestine@israel
@Alon funny … and I’m saying that as someone who regularly reports from Israeli media. Unless you mean #Haaretz or Sikha Mekomit, almost all outlets have been mobilized for hasbara, mostly internal. Outlets like #NYT and #WSJ are friendly enough to cover Israel’s ass in the USA at least.
#UNRWA / we left our headquarters on October 12th on IDF instructions, no knowledge of what’s been happening there since then
In response to new allegations about a tunnel IDF is now claiming it found under UNRWA’s headquarters in Gaza, Phillipe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s director general, said on X that the organization was unaware of its existence until seeing media coverage, having not used the compound since evacuating due to Israeli bombardment in October 2023.
In peacetime UNRWA inspects premises quarterly, but lacks capacity for military inspection of tunnels. When past tunnels were found near UNRWA sites, UNRWA protested to #Hamas and Israeli authorities.
Lazzarini also said that an independent inquiry into the alleged tunnel is merited, but cannot currently occur given the active conflict. #Israel has not officially notified UNRWA about the tunnel.
The Intercept recently exposed Carrie Keller-Lynn, an ex-IDF soldier with ties IDF’s “social media command center” as the co-author of a piece published in #WSJ, which similarly contained unsubstantiated allegations about UNRWA.
#US / Ultranationalists blame Biden for October 7th attack on Israel
Apparently, the Gaza mess isn't enough. US ultranationalists Pense and Pompeo want to start another war, asap.
Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Pompeo, demand the US to abandon diplomacy and return to the "maximum pressure" strategy of the #Trump administration against #Iran, suggesting military strikes on high-value Iranian targets are necessary to deter further aggression.
[...] The result of this appeasement is war, beginning Oct. 7 with #Hamas’s atrocities against #Israel. In the four months since, the Biden administration has continued to resort to appeasement by declining to respond forcefully to Iran’s escalation and attacks."

#MediaBias / Jewish Insider wants WAPO's coverage of the Middle East to be more like that of NYT and WSJ ... 🤔
Jewish Insider claims the Washington Post is "under fire" for "repeated anti-Israel bias, systemic sloppiness in Middle East coverage."
The "fire" seems to be repeated claims by sources such as Jewish Insider editors themselves, Time of Israel and organizations such as #ADL, #CAMERA and few others.
No need to remind anyone who or what #ADL is and how it operates https://droptheadl.org/, but CAMERA (so called "Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America") is possibly even worse.
"To its supporters, CAMERA is figuratively - and perhaps literally - doing God's work, battling insidious anti-Israeli bias in the media. But its detractors see CAMERA as a myopic and vindictive special interest group trying to muscle its views into media coverage. ... To many in the media CAMERA is ... an advocacy group trying to impose its pro-Israeli views on mainstream journalism." --- The Boston Globe, Mark Jurkowitz observed https://web.archive.org/web/20090213190540/http://www.hnn.us/comments/8390.html
The most relevant part in the WAPO's editor's note, later added to the article, states:
"The article incorrectly said that all Palestinian mothers who received authorization to leave Gaza for humanitarian reasons had to return to Gaza to reapply after their permits expired. In fact, it was not always necessary for mothers to return to Gaza."
They also mention addition of comments from Israeli officials.
"Some" is not none, but WAPO correcting itself should be praised. Jewish Insider and the other critics mentioned though want to discredit yet another publication documenting Israel's #WarCrimes in Gaza.
Jewish Insider seem to claim that WAPO's coverage of Israel must be biased, because its tone and findings seem to be very different from that of NYT and WSJ. But, is that a bad thing?
Considering the NYT exploitative coverage of the unconfirmed systematic rape by Hamas militants (in which its reporter misled one of the victims' family) and the hit job on #UNRWA the #IDF ran in the WWSJ, the Washington Post has really nothing to apologize for.
[cont'd] "turn the strip into a slaughterhouse": #NYT investigating Israeli reporter who liked tweet calling to turn Gaza into 'slaughterhouse'
Schwartz began writing for the newspaper last November and focused mainly on the reactions of the Israeli public to the October 7 attack and the war that broke out as a result.
Israeli sources are concerned that the newspaper's decision to question the investigative report on #Hamas terrorists' sexual violence on October 7 due to reporter Anat Schwartz's involvement, could aid deniers in discrediting the credibility of reports about Hamas' sexual assaults.
#WSJ reports the "volume" of Musk's drug use - incl LSD, cocaine, ecstasy & ketamine - for which us lesser mortals would've been toast, created among his friends & board directors of his companies an "expectation" they use drugs alongside him to maintain the social status of being close to him.
Nah. Proly so he'd have something to hold over them in case they might consider reporting him to authorities.
#Israel / Ben Gvir: encouraging Gazans to voluntarily emigrate to places around the world is the real humanitarian thing to do
Ben-Gvir, Israel’s national security minister [convicted for incitement to racism]:
“Instead of giving us his full backing, Biden is busy with giving humanitarian aid and fuel [to Gaza], which goes to Hamas, [...] If Trump was in power, the U.S. conduct would be completely different.”
