A long awaited day has finally arrived, Minecraft Wiki has moved from Fandom to https://minecraft.wiki.

We were able to bring a lot of improvements with this move including less ads, a new skin, faster load time and more.

Please visit https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft_Wiki:Moving_from_Fandom for details why we've made this decision.

Soon we will also share how YOU can help entire Minecraft community reach forked wiki.

Thank you to everyone who have helped making this a reality. ❤️

Aujourd'hui j'ai appris comment Wikipédia fonctionne.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_culture

Hello Fediverse!

Wikipedia :wikipedia: is a multilingual free online encyclopedia written and maintained by a community of volunteers, known as Wikipedians, through open collaboration and using a wiki-based editing system called MediaWiki -- at least that's what our Wikipedia article says (https://w.wiki/W).

The Wikidata community edited Wikidata 2 billion times!

Wikidata is, to the best of my knowledge, the first and only wiki to cross 2 billion edits (the second most edited one being English Wikipedia with 1.18 billion edits).

Edit Nr 2,000,000,000 was adding the first person plural future of the Italian verb 'grugnire' (to grunt) by user Luca.favorido.

Frisk, to community

Spending an hour helping out a person interested in editing wikis, who never edited wikis before, can be infinitely more rewarding both to you as well as the project than spending that hour editing wiki yourself.

Lowering the bar to enter wiki editing, helping out a newcomer and NOT BITING THEM is likely one of the best things you can do to assure success of a wiki project long-term.

It sucks many people don't understand this, but those initial impressions decide whether a given person will be motivated to edit in the future or leave and never come back. And a single person like this can become the most hard-working contributor in a year.

Be kind, be helpful, show the ropes. Wiki editing is learning curve, you helping someone overcome the first step may turn a dead wiki project into insanely helpful resource for the entire community, and give someone else a new hobby they enjoy doing.

We are happy to announce some new features for our community that our admins, @kylewritescode and @cliffwade have been hard at work on for the past month or so.

First, we now have a Wiki (wiki.allthingstech.social)! This will be a central source for everyone to learn more about not only Mastodon, but also AllThingsTech. Have a look around!

Second, we have setup up our own chat server (chat.allthingstech.social) for our community. Come join us!

As much as I love the simplicity of my barf site generator, I recently stumbled on #ikiwiki

https://ikiwiki.info

Seems more up my alley as I plan to make my site into a more structured "info dump". A wiki lends itself better to that concept instead of a tradition "blog".

They also have clean instructions to get up-and-running via NearlyFreeSpeech

Are any of y’all experts on building MediaWiki templates—for example, developing dynamic sidebars like Wikipedia has? I need some help building one out for a personal volunteer project and would love advice/a guide or to connect with someone who could assist

(I know you can download them directly from WP but they are too complex/nested and I’d like to start fresh)

Tomorrow, I'm planning to get back to work on the and on (it's ready and functional), so we can finally have an additional service (Miniflux) and a hub for services and articles (Wiki).

Stay tuned!

Whether you are an editor, a Minecraft player or a friend of indie web - you can help our wiki tremendously even by doing very little. There are multiple ways you could contribute to the success of our new wiki!

The next few months will define how our new Minecraft Wiki will develop and be used in the future, so let's look into how exactly you may help us ultimately help you too.

Boosting and sharing the toot thread is very appreciated.

If you're wondering what's wrong with Fandom and why so many wikis are moving away recently, Hollow Knight YouTuber mossbag made an excellent and in-depth video about the topic:

Is it possible to watch all edits/changes in a #GitHub #wiki, e.g. via #RSS? I know the ".atom" ending to the /wiki page, but this only gives me the new pages added and not all changes.

The Beacon Supergroup is a geologic formation in Antarctica that dates back to the late Precambrian to the Jurassic period. It is one of the most extensively studied rock formations in Antarctica due to its rich fossil content and its potential to provide insights into the geological history of the continent.

My friend Rebecca just pointed me at this

https://en.nearbywiki.org

It’s a geolocation website that pulls from Wikipedia about neat things tagged in the area selected. I can see this being super useful when you’re Starting With Earth and setting a campaign or event somewhere contemporary and looking for inspiration.

Apparently the isolated lake community near our house was formed as a summer community of NY Jewish Firefighters in the 1950s. Huh. Who knew?🤷‍♂️

It's not very often that we have something so significant to announce, but today is such a day, and we need your help.

A number of Minecraft Wiki community members believe that Fandom is no longer a suitable host for the wiki. We are now discussing the potential "fork" – the process of moving the wiki to a new platform. It is probably one of the most important discussions for the wiki, because its result will decide its future for years to come. (1/4)
