What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?
A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.
Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.
How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?
For those unfamiliar with it, Lemmy is basically a federated version of Reddit, distributed across multiple servers like Mastodon. (For anyone who wants to delve further, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, and aussie.zone are three popular Lemmy instances.)
From Mastodon, you can follow any Lemmy group by following its handle, exactly the same way that you would follow a Mastodon account. Any new posts to that group will then begin appearing in your Mastodon feed.
Even better, if you start a thread on Mastodon, you can also post it to a relevant Lemmy group just by including its handle in your post. (Please note this only seems to work with the first post of a thread.)
One of the stupidest things I've seen in Alberta is "drive-thru espresso". Do they have no idea what the qualities of espresso is, and how it's meant to be consumed? You don't take it to go. You enjoy it fresh.
Hi, I'm clearly new here, so here's an #introduction.
I'm Ariel, I'm 23 years old and I'm a #queer#autistic shitlord (shitlady? Fuck it, abolish the aristocracy, I'm a shit-talking #anarchist) with #adhd. Pronouns she/her.
Pastimes include #gaming and other media consumption, tinkering with my PC (usually trying to fix whatever's gone wrong with my #linux build this time, because I have to fucking clue what I'm doing) and with my #mechanicalkeyboard, saying silly things online and making random vocal stims at my girlfriend.
Interests include #tech, urban planning (actually I really just like #trains, #Walkability, and #citiesskylines) and petty online discourse, except for all the times I think it's beneath me.
I just walked along a long stretch of beautiful new sidewalk from a bus stop and encountered this. Shel Silverstein's book is always true-- Where the Sidewalk Ends. he just didn't complete it with the subtitle "With no Advance Warning Far Enough Ahead that You Could Have Crossed at the Roundabout by the Bus Stop to the Side with the Complete Sidewalk and Curb Ramps."
We've built transportation systems that isolate rather than connect. We need complete networks--of people, of infrastructure, of connections between modes--so all of us can get where we need to go.
Mixed land uses are associated with greater social cohesion, according to a new study. Without diverse land uses, dense places can have the opposite effect. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scs.2023.104903
Here's a look into the bold changes that cities made to road space allocation during the pandemic.
In this thought-provoking video, Dr Tabitha Combs (@DrTCombs ) from the University of North Carolina examines how communities responded to the changing demands for mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fort Wayne, IN is really interesting and has been making some cool changes over the last few years in #downtown.
This is Columbia Street, which has been closed off to motor vehicles. This intersection has been raised to sidewalk level, forcing drivers to slow down.
Fort Wayne has also brought in rental bikes and scooters, as well as more bike lanes (although they aren't protected) and bike trails.
#UrbanPlanning + #YIMBY friends: Can anyone point me to stats showing that converting to multifamily zoning disincentivizes car use by curbing sprawl and increasing #walkability / #bikeability rather than (as my NIMBY neighbor believes) increasing traffic? Thanks in advance for any boosts! #ActiveTransportation
"Going out to get photographs and researching Lincoln has really given me a new appreciation to the city. [...] It's a city of great culture, of canals, of places that people that do and will walk to, even in spite of the fact that it's not exactly an Amsterdam of England."
The study shows that the central part is already a 15-minute city, while many suburban neighborhoods have low accessibility scores.
The article also argues that the 15-minute city concept cannot serve as the main development strategy, but can be considered as a flexible tool to support other planning strategies that share the same goals and ambitions.
Results of a recent lighting survey in Rome showed that "walking comfort was affected by mean luminance of whole scene, of sidewalk, of lateral wall and of human body; luminance also influenced the perception of street lighting intensity and uniformity and, to a lesser extent, the visibility of other people and of background."
A huge congratulations to @philipthalis on his well-deserved award.
Philip is undeniably both one of Australia's most respected architects and a tireless advocate for good urban design.
More importantly, he's not afraid to speak up publicly against bad state government planning decisions, as he did with Barangaroo, even when there's a personal cost.
