Results of a recent lighting survey in Rome showed that "walking comfort was affected by mean luminance of whole scene, of sidewalk, of lateral wall and of human body; luminance also influenced the perception of street lighting intensity and uniformity and, to a lesser extent, the visibility of other people and of background."
A huge congratulations to @philipthalis on his well-deserved award.
Philip is undeniably both one of Australia's most respected architects and a tireless advocate for good urban design.
More importantly, he's not afraid to speak up publicly against bad state government planning decisions, as he did with Barangaroo, even when there's a personal cost.
The study shows that the central part is already a 15-minute city, while many suburban neighborhoods have low accessibility scores.
The article also argues that the 15-minute city concept cannot serve as the main development strategy, but can be considered as a flexible tool to support other planning strategies that share the same goals and ambitions.
Tuesday night was a really great night in my career when I won a significant award at an event in Seattle in a room with 800 people. It felt wonderful, and I captured a bit of it here: http://bikestylespokane.com/2024/03/17/a-thrilling-night/.
What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?
A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.
Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.
How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?
@ajsadauskas@fuck_cars I’m in Toronto’s Danforth area, so basically everything except a professional sports arena is within 5-20 mins walk.
The framing of that poll has such a sinister American conspiracy theorist edge: “if your local government decided…” — like having these things nearby can only be forced upon you and you must fight back.
Even if we can't have a 15 minute neighborhood, we could have a bus stop at the post office (which is close enough to 15 minutes of a fast walk or a jog), that then brings you 10 minutes away (by bus) to the town which does have all of these things within 15 minutes walk.
The 15 minute neighborhood concept should be expanded to put everything within 45 minutes, by a combination of public transit and walking, for rural towns where there's not a good way to build them closer.
So many times I see developers "check the box" on #walkability and #urbanism without actually doing it. This street in #Atlanta has wide sidewalks with greenery and public art. But there's no activation. There aren't even doors or windows at street level. Why would anyone want to spend time here? The bare minimum is not enough.
In December of 2021, the City of Alameda adopted the Signalized Intersection Access Equity Resolution. It aims to improve the safety and convenience of walking, biking, and taking transit. You’re seeing it in action at intersections like Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway and Poggi, shown here before construction, and in its transition today. Where once there were pedestrian barriers, a crosswalk and ADA improvements are being installed.
I just walked along a long stretch of beautiful new sidewalk from a bus stop and encountered this. Shel Silverstein's book is always true-- Where the Sidewalk Ends. he just didn't complete it with the subtitle "With no Advance Warning Far Enough Ahead that You Could Have Crossed at the Roundabout by the Bus Stop to the Side with the Complete Sidewalk and Curb Ramps."
For the bonus round on that spot where the sidewalk abruptly ends, to cross the street you're cutting across a sweeping wide open turn with no March crosswalk and likely no way for a left turning driver to know that you might be there given line of sight.
Wow, legislation introduced in #Atlanta today that would ban right turn on red in the core urban neighborhoods. This is HUGE, possibly the biggest pedestrian-friendly policy for the city in a decade. And it has the support to pass! #urbanism#walkability#VisionZero
