One of the most obvious tells in an #AI written article is the overuse of the word “important." Everything is always "It's very important to..." “We must remember the importance of…"

That and the gobs and gobs of filler sentences that state the obvious or don't tell you anything new you didn't know. "Here we are going to discuss why [this] and the benefits of [that]…”

c_9,

@aburtch There’s more than a little “high school student trying to fill out the required page count for the essay” vibe.

If someone has concerns about the federal carbon tax increase, you can reassure then that it’s only in provinces without their own carbon pricing, and only about half a TTC fare per tank of gas:

“Going from $65 per tonne to $80, means the carbon price on a litre of gasoline will now be 17.6 cents per litre, up 3.3 cents per litre from before. … filling a 50 litre tank from empty will cost about $8.80 in carbon price, about $1.65 more.”

Both trucks have the same size cargo bed.

I see trucks like this daily in Toronto, accomplishing little, but blocking our sidewalks and making our residential streets more dangerous. Usually their bed is covered to avoid … getting wet, maybe. It is exceedingly rare to spot a truck like this doing anything actually requiring the size of its engine and wheels.

Still got it.

c_9,

@cyberlyra That’s really awesome, I’m so happy for you! It makes me think about all the public transit research and advocacy work that I used to do and now never find time for. Maybe I should send my husband and kid on a vacation!

I just got a long ranting email as a result of my comments to CBC - it included a claim that I likely don’t take transit, and that the author hasn’t taken transit since the late 90’s. Ooookay.

Holy crap. In the EU, fuel consumption monitoring devices are required on new cars. They studied over 10% of all cars sold in 2021 and turns out they use way more fuel, and generate way more CO2, than anybody thought. Nearly a quarter more. Plug-in Hybrids do poorly too.

This means our projections about getting cars off the road for the climate crisis is hugely undercounting the effects. More rail, more e-bikes, more electric, faster.

Simple. Provide a form for homeowners to indicate they provide permission for using their water usage as a proxy for registration of non-vacancy. Less work for everyone, more accurate results.

Absolutely endorse this column from Ed Keenan in the Star.

“The public is paying for the World Cup and Ontario Place redevelopment, so why are the deals secret?

When the costs and benefits of any government action are kept secret, how is our democratic system supposed to hold that government accountable?”

I was just talking to an American friend about Canadian housing prices, and he shared this graph with me. 😬

Further proof that the Canadian housing crisis really has been insane for over 20 years, with apparently no end in sight.

(FYI: this data is not the whole country, but major metros in each)

c_9,

@tkneubuhler @notjustbikes Interesting how Ford tells on himself here: allowing gentle density would cause a lot of yelling and he personally has a history of not being able to handle a lot of yelling unless it’s from downtown. So he blocks the opportunity for housing.

Friends, I want to ask for a ridiculous favour. My cousins and I scattered across the globe have a chat group and we have come together to support one cousin in an unusual way: we are trying to help her cat win a prize on the internet.

If you could spare a minute and have a Facebook account, you can vote for her cat for free here: https://americasfavpet.com/2024/bubby-2421

If this isn’t for you that’s ok. I hope you have your own project for adding love into the world on the go too!

“Toronto signed a secret agreement that gave it the right to withdraw from hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup if it didn't receive financial support from senior levels of government by mid-2020, internal emails obtained by the Star show.

Which city from this list most subsidizes natural gas transport under city streets? Try to guess:

Edmonton
Halifax
Kelowna
Regina
Toronto
Winnipeg

It’s Toronto! We lose up to $200 million in potential city revenue - a 4.8% property tax increase! - by not charging for using underground pipes.

So who actually charges their gas utility the most from that list? EDMONTON, ALBERTA.

Stop subsidizing fossil fuels.
