Here’s a map that shows the area where the Provincetown Select Board is proposing to ban people from riding bikes but allow people
to drive cars. It encompasses Commercial St through the center of town from the library all the way to the Canteen restaurant. You can read our statement about the proposal and our suggestions for ways to improve safety on the street: https://bikescape.org/pedal-blog/dont-ban-bikes#Provincetown#CapeCod#SafeStreets#traffic#mapoli#bicycle#cycling#BikeTooter
There's plenty of research out there showing that when you add a protected bike lane, a street becomes safer for ALL road users.
However, I'm not convinced that the traffic calming effect that made it safer actually continues to work if you don't bother to maintain the "protection". I fear it's actually the opposite; without the protection, drivers see just a clear lane and drive faster than they did before (where parked cars used to slow down cars, prior to PBL installation). #SafeStreets
So I'm guessing that #NYCDOT decided to go with "20' combined travel and parking lane" because they wouldn't be able to justify 12' travel lanes (ie, highway-sized lanes).
But a 20' combined travel/parking lane is 8' parking and 12' travel lane. That's a choice. Just like it's also a choice to make a 2-way PBL with 4' wide bike lanes in each direction.
I noticed this Mercedes using the bus lane to bypass cars at a red light. Suspicious, I looked up the plate on #HowsMyDrivingNY & found that the driver has OVER ONE HUNDRED FIFTEEN CAMERA VIOLATIONS IN NEW YORK CITY. I thought of @ashok thread on using tech to alert people of risky drivers...
Driver is likely committing insurance fraud by having the car registered in PA. And they've paid almost $7k in fines so far, having decided that doing whatever they want is worth the price. #safestreets
Along with the police violence (look at the sheer number of bullets sprayed into that dormitory!), racism, SCOTUS nonsense, and the general lack of historical coverage (people know about Kent State, but not this) - there's a #SafeStreets/#BanCars angle here too.
50 years later, things truly have not changed much.
#Portland, it's the last day to submit testimony for the city budget for the next year. Ask for #SafeStreets & traffic-calming hardware. Your testimony can simply be “Please fully fund programs that build and support multimodal transportation, and traffic calming with infrastructure to protect people walking and biking. Monitoring should hold all bureaus accountable for prioritizing resources to transition Portland away from fossil fuels and reduce our GHG emissions."
A driver hit at cyclist in #Berkeley on San Pablo at Dwight this morning and apparently severed the cyclist’s leg. I don’t know the details yet—this is just based on PD/FD scanner traffic.
What I do know is Berkeley had a chance to take Federal grants to make this intersection safer for cyclists and said no. The ACTC project would not have come in time to avoid this incident, but we lost the chance to avoid future incidents here. #SafeStreets#BikeTooter
The only thing about cycling more discouraging than incidents of traffic violence like this is reading the responses to them. I will keep fighting regardless but it will be through gritted teeth and disdain. #Berkeley#SafeStreets#BikeTooter
Neither the current Mayor of #Berkeley, who is running for State Senate, nor any of the three people running to become Mayor have posted anything about this incident. (Other members of Council have, and I appreciate that they have. But the silence from the purported and aspiring leaders is shameful.) #SafeStreets#BikeTooter
You can totally bike around Berkeley with this approach, and it’s mostly okay except for arterial crossings. The problem is that getting to this level of comfort requires commitment and expertise and bikey friends to advise you. And that severely limits who rides. #BikeTooter#SafeStreets
I just read a story about banning turn right on red in many parts of SF (good. I almost get run over very often by exactly this). But the story interviewed someone who said ‘but I think now with people walking around with noise cancelation, I can't tell you how many times I've seen people almost get run over’
People who blame pedestrians and victims. Why do you do this? What is wrong with you?
Living Streets Canberra is hosting its April meeting on the 9th of April via Zoom at 6pm. We want to make walkability and safe streets an election issue this year. The meeting is open to all, so if this is something you are interested in, please join us.
I see trucks like this daily in Toronto, accomplishing little, but blocking our sidewalks and making our residential streets more dangerous. Usually their bed is covered to avoid … getting wet, maybe. It is exceedingly rare to spot a truck like this doing anything actually requiring the size of its engine and wheels.
This is all totally normal stuff for news coverage of traffic collisions that kill cyclists. You might also hear whether they were wearing reflective clothing. What's not reported here is the speed the vehicle was going when the driver lost control, nor the type of vehicle it was, both of which matter way, way, way more than helmets or reflective clothing for cyclists or pedestrians surviving a collision with a car. https://www.staradvertiser.com/2024/03/24/breaking-news/woman-killed-in-crash-along-fort-weaver-road/#BikeTooter#SafeStreets
Man: "Why are you walking in the park alone?"
Woman: "That's a personal question. I'm on my way back to my car"
M: "Can I walk you down?"
W: "I'm fine thank you"
M: "No need to be scared, I'm being a gentleman"
W: "That's nice but I don't know you and you're following me, which is alarming"
M: "You can get to know me, we can be friends"
W: "Why would I want to do that?"
M: "Give me a hug, I'm not going to bite"

Another great example of planners' visualization utopia: 21 pedestrians, one stroller! 2 cyclists, one in a business suit! Someone in a wheelchair! 2 scooters! 2 buses! Oh, and, sure, I guess we should add a car.
