My dirty fingers give me hope.

A friend's kid needed emergency roadside bike repair this morning on their ride to school, and I happily obliged.

I'm glad my friend's kid has the freedeom to independently, and am glad to be a part of a community that is working to make this possible for more kids.

@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@DrTCombs one thing I didn't expect about Kidical Mass: we wind up doing A LOT of kids' bike repairs at the start of the ride. I think your dirty fingers are fantastic and that a biking community that supports each other with maintenance is a healthier one!

And the last question (hope it's okay that this ended up being a Q8, @trouble)

Q8. What's the most recent thing you bought/added to your bike? Or clothing, or any cycling related thing. Anything new or fun?

@ascentale @trouble #BikeNite A8. Uhhhhhh I added a bubble machine on the back of my #CarlaCargo bike trailer. 🫣🚲🫧 My friend Molly had one and I asked her about it. It was very popular at #KidicalMass and at #BtWD! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019QDNC92

lol. Shelter wouldn't let us take home fosters (in a hard shell carrier) in the #CargoBike because "it's too dangerous". I even deflated the tires a bit for this, for a smoother ride.

So many #CarBrains in #NYC, I'm so fucking tired of it. #BanCars

[for background, every cat I've ever dealt with has been terrified in a car. They hate the speed, and the loud engine/vibrations. It's one of the reasons I started transporting my former cats by bike.]

View of the inside of the box. There's a bag of cat food, a white fuzzy cat bed, a blanket underneath, and room for a cat carrier on top of the cat bed.

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@Andres4NY what. That is absurd.

I'm organizing the City of Berkeley's "Bike to Wherever Day" ride this Thursday, May 16th, starting at 8:15a at North Berkeley BART. Everyone is invited and the city would love to see and demonstrate demand for cycling here. Please join us! Since supporting bike lanes is the single most cost-efficient way to fight climate change, it follows that cutting budget for bike lanes is the single least-effective cost savings measure one could take. And yet, here we are.

I would strongly consider buying cameras for my bike except I have exactly zero faith SFPD would do anything about anything short of my death.

marcprecipice,

@luis_in_brief I wish I had faith US cities would act on cyclists' deaths, even. I do not. I can't even get Berkeley to admit that a cyclist died as a result of a traffic collision on our streets, 1.5 years after the fact. Individuals in government likely care a lot but systemically cities do not act like they care at all.

Saw "The Beekeeper" with Jason Statham. There could not be a more awesome movie!

  1. Beekeeping!
  2. Old pickup truck!
  3. Woodworking tools!
  4. Anti-crypto/NFT
  5. Plot could have come from a drunk version of my beekeeping toots about replacing a queen
  6. Cybercriminals get their just desserts
  7. Hero is a nice guy
  8. Beekeeper as the hero

(It brought tears to my eyes, truly).

@ai6yr what was the thing with the bag at the beginning? Electrocuting wasps or something?

After three attempts, what I’ve learned about applying for government permits for group bike rides is that you should NEVER EVER EVER EVER do that. People told me! I wanted to do things the “right” way. I was wrong. They were right. If you have a plan or location that requires a permit, change plans. Learn from my mistakes! #BikeTooter

The Beekeeper with Jason Statham is a kickass nerd flick.

I avoided it for weeks until someone told me it was John Wick but instead of Russian mobsters, he kills phone scammers and blows up call centers that rip people off.

As someone that has had to explain to my own dad many times that Microsoft and Amazon and Apple aren’t really calling him and reminding him to never pay for anything on a call he didn’t place himself, I enjoyed The Beekeeper as the nerd fantasy film it truly is.

marcprecipice,

@mathowie you might enjoy Thelma, coming out in June.

The only time I’ve ever been what one could call a “responsible” consumer in my entire life was my refusal to buy an Apple Vision Pro. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/27/24142810/apple-vision-pro-ebay-low-prices

@film_girl big same

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@film_girl yeah, I totally agree. I spent a lot of time reading reviews and basically looking for a reason to be excited about it, and came up empty. It has both a high dollar cost and a high social cost, even just at home, and neither of those seemed worth the benefits.

“‘It comes across as well-intentioned, but this is a classic delay tactic by people who oppose improvements,’ said Luke Bornheimer, an advocate who pushed for the [improvements]. He now fears the idea will be shipwrecked on the rocks of committee meetings and community feedback.”

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@jef @LukeBornheimer Agree. And setting the expectation that local residents/businesses get veto over street design is a path to that.

@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

Checked off the list. Hauled a bunch of books home via cargo rack (lesson: pack a canvas bag in the backpack).

@meganL I can't judge how it would feel for you but I'm not aware of the height while driving. (On the bike path I am very aware of the height—if anything the bike path may make the car path more comfortable in that respect.) Anyway, unsure, if you want one of my kids to record a video we can do that.
