Still kind of numb about the Dooce news. She was a trailblazer in blogging and a force of nature as a person.

But my memories of her are marred by last year’s unexpected turn to anti-trans beliefs. Everyone I know that had her number in their phones tried to talk to her and explain why it was bad but she eventually just deleted the posts with not much of any mea culpa. At the time, I chalked it up to her religious upbringing and hoped she’d eventually come around…

My teen-aged daughter and I are staying in San Francisco this week. She gave me a full run-down on how much better public transit is over here, how easy it is for her to get around town, how it makes seeing her friends so simple. I nodded and tried to hide my smile. #PublicTransit #Parenting

A deep dive on Andreessen Horowitz's latest "State of Crypto" report. In short: they want people to keep buying crypto, and are not above publishing blatant falsehoods to convince them to do so.

The report itself is 60 pages long, so this is a long one.

@molly0xfff do you take donations any way other than Substack? (I realize “Pay how you want” is harder than “Pay what you want.”)

@molly0xfff ah, sorry I missed that. Thanks (and thanks for all the great writing).

okay, i feel like courting controversy today.

what's your take on Blue Sky?

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@est They’re not a non-profit and it seems inevitable to me they’ll sell attention at some point. Also not interested in another Dorsey-linked joint and don’t buy the “he’s just a board member” stuff. But I don’t like the sportsfan arguing about it; if it’s great for others, good. One central “town sqaure” is dead (if it ever existed).

@est yup, same.

A business that (I think!) I would like to see exist:

A paid service that allows you to delegate trust and safety activities for your Mastodon instance to them, owned and staffed by people who are very experienced and qualified to provide that service. Ideally, instances advertise that trust and safety is handled by this provider.

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

My premises for this are: (1) People who are great at setting up and running an instance, and gathering a community, are not necessarily great at providing T&S, and even if they are, there's no way for a user joining to know that from the outside, until it's too late. (2) Many abusive users will try to evade block/ban actions, and a service with scope over many instances can probably defend against abusers better as a result.

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

Also, Trust and Safety is, as we know, brutal and very difficult work. Having that be an add-on responsibility for an instance admin is likely to make that role worse and worse over time, across many admins. Treating it as an important, paid responsibility may allow for better outcomes than each admin having to deal with it as an increasing and maybe unexpected part of their role.

This is rad. I’ve never carried this much, although yesterday I used a Bullitt + Carla Cargo to carry two other bikes off for donation. Stops traffic almost as well as a bollard! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1p-uB1RNWY

@luis_in_brief wow, I didn’t know they made that. Being able to tow another bike was a huge improvement in getting my kids to go on more-adventurous rides with me.

This is quite a good overview of the transformation of Paris in recent years. One thing it highlights, which I’ve seen elsewhere too, is how critical the election of a forward-thinking mayor was for this transformation to gain momentum. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSQSBoHmG8s

Tim Bray’s @timbray post (https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2023/04/28/Bluesky) points out that Bluesky has taken at least $13m in investment (https://twitter.com/bluesky/status/1518707604750430208). Is there some plausible story about why investors will support this company other than ads? #Bluesky

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@timbray right, but they have employees and are hiring, and salary and benefits need to come from somewhere. I’m asking, where is that money coming from and what expectations come with it. If the money is just a straight-up grant, why choose a for-profit structure?

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@timbray yeah, I don’t know the structure of whatever deal they took. They describe Twitter’s money as “initial funding,” so I’ll just say funders.

Musk tried to trick people into believing that celebrities like @KingJames and @StephenKing paid for Twitter Blue.

They did not and Musk got called out on it.

Musk has now copped to it and admitted he has paid for James, King and a handful of others to keep their blue checks

@juddlegum @bethanye that is some King shit.

@ancient_catbus @jef this works for me with my helmet camera on my bike helmet: if the camera is on the helmet, people drive more carefully around me whether the camera is on/charged or not.
