Y’know, I’ve never really got cast iron, why people get into it, but maybe I’ve just never seen it really completely restored. I’ve seen it painted and kinda rusty and not rusty but not really maintained I guess? Or maybe that’s just the mean state, I dunno.
But fully and freshly restored it’s sculptural as fuck and I’m kinda starting to maybe get it.
Dad did a lot of woodworking, and I know pretty much all of the tools in his garage.
This one has me flummoxed. It has what appears to be threaded holes, though the threads are shallow. Each hole is labeled with a diameter. The whole thing is hinged at one end, with thumb screws to close it tight.
It’s in a drawer with a tap and die set, some hacksaws and a box of forstner bits.
When I was seven or eight, I asked Santa to bring me a set of screwdrivers for Christmas. I wanted to take apart my toys to see how they worked1. I also thought they might be useful on our upcoming holiday; if the aeroplane needed repairing mid-flight I'd be able to help2! Santa heard my […]
I wrote a mini-review (or at least some of my thoughts) on the NIIMBOT D11, a cheap Chinese thermal label printer. The good and the bad, as I see it...
What is the best way to create presentations nowadays? I've been using reveal.js for ages, but I was wondering is there a better way? Apple Keynote? #Presentation#Tools#AskMastodon#AskFed
Binvis is an unusual binary file viewing tool. Along with the traditional hex dump, it visualizes color-coded views of the data that make it easier to spot patterns and locate specific portions of the files.
I actually finished this project months ago but never got photos or wrote up the blog post, so I finally got around to it! If you are interested in my process, or digital fabrication, it may be worth a read...
Made a quick tripod for the laser level this morning. The tripod worked well, but the green laser was nearly useless in the bright sun. In the afternoon shade it was okay.
Hearing protection when working with loud tools - what do you use?
Are these auto-muting ones good? They seem like a good idea, but how is it in practice?
My problem with hearing protection is that tool use is intermittent but I don't want to be deaf and oblivious the whole time. Nor constantly pull them on and off (or worse, in and out).
Long ago I bought a Craftsman screwdriver - back when Craftsman were inside a Sears. I figured the design was generic enough to be used by another company. After squinting at lots of pictures on ebay I found it!
Over the last few weeks I dove deep into PowerToys (open source utilities for Windows) and learned how to be more productive using Windows. Finally, a decent app launcher, color pickers, remote controlling multiple machines, and more!
Hello MacOS-using photographers. Is there an easy way to add EXIF data to the Finder, or a utility to see EXIF when browsing file folders? As I browse my memory cards, I want to be able to confirm which camera was used, and maybe look at GPS data if available.
