10 years ago, teacher Twitter was extremely helpful to me. There's the #teaching hashtag here, which is nice, but are most people still on X? Or worse, Facebook?
Trying to build that side of my timeline back up. Boots appreciated along with recommendations of who to follow.
@brianb
Hi Brian. Not sure how #chemistry specific
you are hoping your community to be? Albeit, you might want to check out who is following
the @edutooters group.
Also, you can have a look to see who is participating in Miguels education community @mguhlin
Harvard's metaLab has launched https://aipedagogy.org, a resource chock full of tasty assignments by trailblazers of generative AI in the classroom. (My own "AI Sandwich" is also on the menu.)
I've already stolen Juliana Castro's "Illustrate a Hoax" for my own class!
I've been here for a while, but this is a good time to do this again!
Incoming assistant professor of #STEMEducation in the Teaching, Learning, and Professional, Practice Department at the University of North Dakota.
My research interests lie around student engagement in secondary STEM education. I think about this from a systems (re)design perspective as well as student-level indicators of engagement.
I prioritize community partnerships and interdisciplinary methods
I’m having a happy little time writing via a teacher to a little kid interested in STEM- it’s the second year I’ve participated in https://prescientist.org/ and it’s awesome to get asked curious questions. I’d recommend it - they’re always on the lookout for more STEM professionals and it’s good for the soul.
Currently trying to think how to answer “what do you know about computers” without infodumping! #LettersToAPreScientist#stemEducation
If you have any interest in everyday science, or you have a kid who might be interested in everyday science, please check out the Curiosity Show. It ran in the '80s and' 90s and it's an incredible introduction into the science behind things to make and do. #science#education#stem#stemeducation
Good morning, happy Friday and happy weekend Mastodon!
For the #MorningMoments today, talk to me about your plans for the day, what you hope to accomplish, what you have planned for today and the weekend ahead, or just anything you wish to talk about!
For me, I have absolutely no plans outside of a bit of work. Will likely make it a video game day today and then catch up on some TV shows.
An interferometer is a really cool laser experiment you can do at the bench 💪🏼😃
You need a laser diode with a built in photo diode sensor - not all of them have it. Keep the power low, and safe. I chose the ADL65052.
(Laser diodes are NOT like your common LED so if you’ve never played with them before, start with that)
Then build a transimpedance amplifier (a current to voltage amp), connect the output to an oscilloscope and here’s what happens:
The light can be reflected back into the laser, causing constructive and destructive interference. The sensor diode sees this as varying light depending on the distance to the reflector.
It’s REALLY sensitive, it’ll pick up vibrations of the surface of my bench 😳
It’s a well described experiment, there’s a whole Wikipedia article on the principle. The physics behind it is quite sofisticated though - so it’s a neat experiment to replicate 🤓
