@apps What about the development of #Fedilab towards a support of #Firefish that was announced a while ago? Or even #Sharkey as an alternative to Firefish?
I would love to use Fedilab again after switching the server to Sharkey a few weeks ago. It was and is still simply the best app I know for the Fediverse. Imho.
@apps
Until a few weeks ago, #Fedilab also worked with #Sharkey, but unfortunately not since then. At least not with the federation.network instance where I'm based. I don't know exactly what the problem is — the app, the server, the API... In any case, posts are no longer displayed in the timelines (see screenshot) @daniel
There's an annoying bug in #Sharkey and it is that if you're in the beautifully gorgeous deck mode and hit F5, it takes you back to single-column layout whenever you're anywhere else than the root URL.
Soeben das Upgrade auf #Firefish 20240326 eingespielt. Und in der Tat, diese Version hat jetzt Mastodon API, dh der Zugriff ist über ein App möglich (zB #Fedilab).
I have so many follow relationships with so many talented people here!
It's so great to see all of you and your interesting projects and creations across such a variety of hobbies and professions.
It's only going to get better with Threads federation under way! Future of Fedi will sure be interesting and I'm glad to be a part of something that could fundamentally change the way "Internet" is done as a whole.
The future awaits. After years of gaining steam, Fedi has arrived.
What are some well-run, mid-sized mastodon instances that are allowing federation with threads? I assume masto social is, but I'd rather avoid the mothership.
@objectinspace infosec.exchange is one (they do hide the profiles by default but still federate). Seems like this instance here has not blocked it either if you'd like to give #sharkey a try instead.
Better start looking for a Sharkey compatible iOS app I guess....IceCubes doesn't seem to support it, even though Sharkey claims to use the Mastodon API, I guess that's not enough for seemless app usage....😬
You know what makes more sense than Unlisted or Quiet Public? Home. My brain follows this so much more. Public, shows up everywhere. Home, shows up in home timeline only. Followers, only shows up to your followers. Direct, just tagged people. So clear.
Wait, #Pleroma has a thing where instance admins can manage emoji collections with a package manager? Does it just use the URL once and forget it or does it set up a chron job to check for updates? Is there a way to set up an auto-updater for #Sharkey? I don't want to bother @Kitty every time @volpeon adds new ones.
Looking for name ideas for my future Sharkey instance.
I need to get off of this ridiculous Mastodon ride. Technically, I guess I COULD just do something temporary and then when I delete this instance, remake it with Sharkey and migrate again. I'd have "social" back, but that seems like a lot of work.
It's just gonna be me 99% of the time typing it in manually, so I want to keep it short, but also make sense or even funny/witty.
@ve3qbz I was using Firefish but the project kind of died. I migrated over the weekend to Sharkey.
Both Firefish and Sharkey are forks of Misskey.
Misskey and all its forks (there are a lot. Seriously a lot.) all use Activity Pub under the hood and I believe implement a lot of their APIs in a Mastodon-compatible way as well.
The initial config was super easy. The hardest thing about it was getting Let's Encrypt cert generating working. If you know any Docker, it's a breeze.
Even the migration from Firefish to Sharkey was pretty easy. The hardest part there was doing some database migrations, but the Sharkey team have great documentation and are super helpful in their Discord channel.
In the past I've tried to set up both Mastodon and Hubzilla and both were absolute torture compared to getting Sharkey online. I really recommend it!
If you're thinking about hosting your own instance, I can't recommend it enough. It doesn't take much hardware- I'm running on an old small form factor desktop from 10+ years ago.
It won't be too hard if you have any experience hosting your own web apps and either know a little Docker or are willing to try it.
How does Sharkey compare to Mastodon?
To those who have used both which do you prefer overall?...
