Michael Brenson's big & relentless biography, David Smith: The Art & Life of a Transformational Sculptor (2022) pulls few punches in revealing an artist who was part genius part (toxic) alpha male whose relations with women were very much pre- MeToo. I love the details above these windows on a tenement on Peel Street in the Partick area of Glasgow, especially the cherubs in boats getting pulled along by swans. The building dates from 1875 and was designed by H and D. Barclay.
