How School Board Meetings Became Flashpoints for Anger and Chaos Across the Country
In the first wide-ranging analysis of school board unrest, ProPublica found nearly 60 incidents that led to arrests or criminal charges. Almost all were in suburban districts, and nearly every participant was white.
Very good point made at a launch event yesterday for UCL’s new Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education - we might teach the Industrial Revolution in schools as a critical transition period, but really, it’s 1950 onward (the “Great Acceleration”) that really made the biggest difference. Why aren’t we teaching that in history classes?
While many would agree that A-levels are too narrowly focussed, the move to a baccalaureate system without significant reform of the rest of the system would be a disaster;
and reforming the rest of a system currently in crisis & with a lack of goodwill from #Teachers sounds more like another swing of the wrecking ball rather than a real desire to improve the UK's #education
New update: Prosecutors refused to drop charges against 11-year-old #Brownsville boy who was put in #solitary confinement, may actually be bringing MORE charges against him.
“The American Indian Native studies course that we’ve developed is heavily focused on modern #indigenous people, both in #Texas and beyond because we do still exist.”
Been thinking about this a lot today - I didn't go to this school but I went to one very similar. https://t.co/4SMEa6J6lH
I was lucky, and a bit necky. I've "made it" in a way my younger self couldn't even imagine. Lots of kids going to #schools like mine will not. I'm also sure a bunch of otherwise talentless idiots at #publicschools are going to get the post COVID help they need. I'm not sure how to help, we waste a massive amount of potential.
Judd Legum reports on the testimony given by mysterious Lanah Burkhardt before the Conroe, Texas, school board. Burkhardt wants books censored, especially Scholastic Books. She claims that reading a Scholastic Book with the phrase "a single kiss" turned her into a porn addict when she was 11 years old.
After hearing her, the Conroe board voted to restrict access to the book she claims made her a porn addict.
A fifth-grader from #Brownsville ISD reported being bullied by his principal. Five days later, he was handcuffed and detained. He spent 3 days in solitary confinement.

For a neurodivergent person, the standard school system can be terrifying and exhausting. Because of both the structures, and the way we tend to be treated, both by staff and other students.
I wonder if any of us leave school without significant trauma from the years we spent there.
As the crisis in #schools continues, the detail(s) that come to light are both horrifying & instructive of how far the #social collapse engineered over the last decade & half by the #Tories has gone.
We should be enduring our young people have a supportive & developmental school environment, not causing (especially vulnerable pupils) further angst, stress & isolation.
#Teachers are doing the best they can in almost impossible circumstances while the #tories grim & jeer
Parched farms, cancelled classes: Extreme heat scorches South-East Asia
"Due to the unbearable heat, the [#Philippines'] Department of Education has allowed #schools to either hold remote lessons or cancel classes altogether.
The country is also in the process of shifting back to a June to March academic calendar, following complaints among students and teachers over holding classes during the peak summer season."
Red flag: In the US, "#teachers are dead last among all occupational groups and professions in feeling their opinions count at work, that their supervisor creates an open and trusting environment and that they are treated with respect each day. Teachers are also the highest of all professions in experiencing burn-out and stress. And it’s no wonder why half of all teachers are currently looking for a new job." https://www.forbes.com/sites/brandonbusteed/2024/02/23/to-fix-us-education-free-our-teachers/
