'Negotiations' for the UK to rejoin the #Horizon research programme continue.... #JeremyHunt's in #Brussels trying (again) to get a discount because we've missed the first two years of the new programme.

Problem is that we caused that delay not the EU, and the feeling at the #EuropeanCommision is that they're not going to offer a discount because the UK can't get its ducks in a row.

Meanwhile #universities are hemorrhaging #researchers departing for somewhere they can get Horizon money now!

Safety matters.

Your safety is at the heart of our action and, as of this week, our General Product Safety Regulation will ensure that only reliable products are offered to European #consumers.

The new rules will, among others:

  • Ensure safer products in-store and online, regardless of their origin,
  • Make product recalls more effective,
  • Give national authorities more powers and better tools to take action.

This is a beautiful read for anyone interested in or in - the story of Pauline Atherton Cochrane, a , who in the 1970s, worked on the project, one of the first search and information retrieval () systems.

It shows how the team anticipated shifts in how research would be conducted, and acted to support .

Beautifully written piece by Monica Westin, at the via @aeonmag.

"Atherton’s team wasn’t predicting a world where expert librarians wouldn’t be needed; they were preparing for a world where research would take place in many disparate locations, too far from a reference desk for them to be able to help."

#Researchers who share code with their papers: how do you make your code available to the reviewers without it being fully public? (And while guaranteeing the anonymity of the reviewers)

Something I'm really proud of is that I've published research applying clinical science across a wide range of disciplines (e.g. wilderness, neuro, medicine, software engineering).

Something I absolutely despise about this is the many different journal citation and style guidelines I've had to learn every time I submit something.

I'M LIKE JUST PICK ONE WHO CARES.

‘Too greedy’: mass walkout at global science journal over ‘unethical’ fees - this mass walkout, paired with general outrage in the #science community, is getting a lot of well-deserved attention. Massive margins and billions in corporate profit off of publishing scientific papers is ludicrous, a disgrace. It’s up to #scientists #researchers and #academics to put a stop to this. Offering non-profit alternatives, if widely supported, will do just that. Let’s hope this is a movement moment. #academia #HigherEducation #university #research #publishing #capitalism #greed #elsevier https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/may/07/too-greedy-mass-walkout-at-global-science-journal-over-unethical-fees
