I fixed my silly phone.
It's a Pixel 4A 5G, and there's dust under the main camera, which is something I use a decent bit.
I was doing tons of research into alternative OSes (because even de-googled #Android is pretty BLEH), and was considering getting a #PinePhone (not Pro) for #PostmarketOS & #SXMO, or getting a Pixel 3a XL for #UBports.
To everyone who considers themselves a fan of Flatpaks:
I just installed a single app (Fractal) and it now occupies two and a half gigabytes on my sixteen gig tablet.
Are you sure this is the right way to disrtribute software?
I bricked my oneplus 6t (codename fajita) recently and have not yet been able to recover it. My current last resort seems to be using the MSMDownload Tool - but I don't have access to a windows machine (just linux & macos)
Does anyone have a link to good instructions how to unbrick my op6t without needing to install windows on my laptop?
I gave KDE Plasma Mobile another go. It improved a LOT over the past few months. No crashes yet! It's a lot more stable now. Although not as stable as Phosh.
I like their whole "just copy Android" philosophy. Everything feels familiar and intuitive. I might keep it like this.
Day 2 of attempting to daily drive postmarketOS Linux on a OnePlus 6T:
At the moment, I'm still carrying an Android phone which provides a wifi hotspot.
The most important things have been established: Fediverse access (via Tuba) and messaging (via Fractal). After initial problems with the repo-version of Fractal, the Flatpak version works very well. I've already been messaging my wife, family and friends from Linux.
I also successfully purchased and downloaded a public transport ticket for February.
The battery life has been very very good. I think the automatic suspend is working it's magic. However, I'm not sure if this affects notifications yet.
Day 4 of attempting to daily drive postmarketOS Linux on a OnePlus 6T:
📶 I felt brave this morning, so I handed over my SIM card to Linux. At first, the phone didn't recognise the card, but the wiki page helped me resolve the problem quickly. I had to increase the config value sim_wait_time and reboot the phone to make it work. Mobile data and receiving texts work flawlessly. I haven't tried sending texts and making calls yet.
⏰ Yesterday, I also used the Clock app to set an alarm to wake up and a timer when cooking, and it actually worked fine, even with the phone locked.
🚈 I also had my train ticket checked today. I was able to present the QR code without any issues.
Some proprietary streaming apps such as Prime Video seem to work well on #Waydroid over #postmarketOS. There are still bugs with media playback clocks sometimes, but the streaming itself is flawless.
A friend of mine gave me a bunch of old phones he had lying around, and one of them (a Samsung Galaxy A3 from 2015) is supported by postmarketOS! I am now the proud owner of a Linux phone! 🚀🎉🚀
Is anyone in the #pdx area interested in running real Linux (#postmarketOS) on their old phone, tablet, whatever? Do you want help installing it? Let's meet up!
I am blown away by #Jolla's new subscription model... I can understand why it is necessary, but at this point I would go with #PlasmaMobile with #PostmarketOS: open source as I wish #SailfishOS was
Well, in celebration of #KDE#Plasma6, I thought I should give @postmarketOS another go on my old Samsung Galaxy A3. The documentation was not at all straightforward, not thanks to #Nix shell I manages to get all required software ready and it booted into #PostmarketOS.🍾
This was the good news. Now the bad news: the PostmarketOS documentation reads "if the image has a pin on it try 0000, 1111, 1234, or 147147". I tried them in order and the phone died and doesn't turn on anymore 🤔
I just wanted to get the word out about a cool new project @hexaheximal and I have been working on.
lowendlibre! 🎉🎉
It is a project focused on bringing the developing Mobile Linux ecosystem to devices under $100. The main distros we are going to focus on are #postmarketOS and #Mobian, but per-device support of other distros is also considered. If you are interested in supporting this project, we have a Matrix space at #lowendlibre:matrix.org.
