purism, to linuxphones

🚀 📱 phosh 0.39.0 is out. Some highlights:

  • : folder support, night light quick setting
  • : wakeup-key handling (to prevent accidental unblank)
  • : New layouts, lots of layout improvements
  • mobile-settings: Allow to manage custom quick settings, allow to toggle whether to ignore hw keyboards, many new translations

Check out the full release notes at https://phosh.mobi/releases/rel-0.39.0/

agx,

@purism Nice you like the release but wouldn't it be better to boost https://fosstodon.org/@phosh/112445825369450917 rather than copy the message verbatim?

@ahoneybun @phosh Not that I'm aware of but see https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Phosh/squeekboard/-/issues/374 and related issues.

I needed bindings for an app to interact with to submit feedback. Here's the generated bindings for libfeedback in case someone else needs it too:

I remember how nervous I was when (in early 2020) I went to the post office with my 📱 to drop off a 📦 and present the barcode on the phone. (Having previously scp'ed the pdf to the phone to show it in evince).

Would the 🔋 last? Would it overheat? Would the display stack hold? It worked.

Nowadays I don't spend a thought: Fill in the data on my laptop, save the pdf, have it synced automatically via to 's ticket-box folder and show it at the counter. ✅

agx,

@okennedy 🚀 Awesome! Seeing more and more use cases working is great.

I've tagged a new release of mobile-broadband-provider-info:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mobile-broadband-provider-info/-/releases/20240407

It has updated providers, support for mms attachment size and we switched the build system to meson.

I wonder: If a project deliberately unilaterally abandons a specification, would it be reasonable to ignore their voice in subsequent change discussions to that particular specification, for changes that other projects want to make to it?

After all, by breaking the convention, there apparently is no longer any interest in collaboration and cross-desktop integration anyway...

It would suck though, it would make the Linux desktop poorer, inconsistent and app dev's lives harder.

agx,

@matk I'd still listen to their points (as they might be insightful for further developing the standards or to bring them back on board) but wouldn't let a NACK from them block a change if those still developing the spec find it useful.

Laptop died yesterday but thanks to the , the Baseus Dock, an HDMI Screen, a USB keyboard and 's docked mode I have access to most of the things via my phone.

helps a lot as that means I have my ssh keys available by just plugging it in.

Took me about 15min to notice that I didn't even plug a mouse in.

agx,

@pavel phosh or rather phoc is pretty lightweight in that regard. I'd try a terminal like foot on the PP.

On the Librem5 the issue is that we don't use the advanced features of the external display controller (DCSS) like texture comression (which is a driver limitation in the kernel / mesa) so memory bandwidth becomes tight when driving both displays and hence things can become laggy.

Very, very happy that our proposal for adding #cellbroadcast support to #ModemManager and #Phosh was accepted by @NGIZero : https://nlnet.nl/project/SMS-CB 🗼 〰️ 📱

agx,

@z3ntu @phosh @NGIZero Happy to provide updated branches with the patches we have at that point.

Today I finished my term as Debian Project Leader. It feels almost as surreal as having become DPL in the first place. Thanks to everyone who has shown their confidence, support and assistance over the last four years, and more than that, thank you to everyone who has made Debian better, not only as a Linux distribution, but as a global project that we can be proud of!

agx,

@highvoltage Thank you for all those years!

A new release of #feedbackd is out (https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/feedbackd/-/releases/v0.3.0).

Besides some cleanups the user visible change is that "blessed" apps can now override the global feedback level so e.g. your alarm clock can ring even when the phone is in quiet mode (https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Phosh/phosh/-/merge_requests/1398)

#LinuxMobile

agx,

@phosh I've recently refreshed the gnome-clocks feedbackd patches (https://gitlab.gnome.org/guidog/gnome-clocks/-/commits/lfb) but it needs a bit more work before it can be proposed upstream.

Is there anyone from the community living in Berlin with a working battery who would be willing to help me booting and updating my device once? Unfortunately my battery is dead and I haven't found out how to quickly get a new one - however IIUC it would boot without battery once updated to a newer firmware (https://forums.puri.sm/t/librem-5-does-not-boot-without-battery/16954/11).

agx,

@rmader @rmader Is that an evergreen? Maybe I could get you a spare battery.

haui, to linuxphones

today i got my new tinker phone and I managed to install #Postmarketos and #phosh on it. its definitely not a bug free experience but I love it. i sank like 10 hrs into it and its great fun.

the devs are very helpful if stuff doesnt work at all but mostly stuff can be solved with changing orientation or trying again.

nextcloud bookmarks and floccus doesnt wanna work atm and flathub outright is useless on this phone.

still, having a proper terminal and a phone i can own is great.

agx,

@haui flathub shouldn't be an issue. I'm installing apps from there on a regular basis on a #Librem5 with #phosh.

Want to build your own lock screen widget or quick setting in ? @arunmani explains how that works in https://phosh.mobi/posts/custom-plugins-dev/ 🛠️

agx,

@Shatur @phosh @arunmani Maybe instead of quick settings use a PhoshStatusPage that appears on long click of the wwan quick setting (very similar to what wifi does for the wifi network selection) and add the mobile data toggle there. That could easily be merged upstream.

Question! Why should local governments use taxpayers’ money to buy proprietary, closed software from a single vendor? And what happens to citizens' data? A solution is to move to free and open source software like and – which is exactly what Schleswig-Holstein is doing: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/04/04/german-state-moving-30000-pcs-to-libreoffice/

agx,

@libreoffice That is great to hear! Please brace for the political backlash and constant and continuous lobbying of proprietary software vendors.

That's what in the end brought down earlier attempts in e.g. Munich () or the German Federal Foreign Office.

agx,

@linmob IIRC the root cause here is in phoc/wlroots and you see it on Droidian and PureOS because they use older versions.

Nice that it's fixed for everyone now 😄

With some preparatory work to allow plugins to use objects from #phosh core and @arunmani 's nice work on custom quick settings already merged the often asked for caffeine toggle is within reach:

#gtk #gnome #LinuxMobile

The caffeine toggle in Phosh's quick setting allows to prevent the session from going idle. The video demos this using "watch gnome-session-inhibit -l"

agx,

@phosh @arunmani …and we can do a night light toggle as a plugin too:

agx,

@alaraajavamma @phosh @arunmani you have to enable/disable the additional ones but I hope we land UI support for this in 0.39 too:

agx,

@pocketvj @phosh @arunmani Yes, the display stack and Wayland compositor need support for it. Sway supports it so wlsunset (https://sr.ht/~kennylevinsen/wlsunset/) should already work.

agx, to linuxphones

If you're using #phosh in docked mode a lot and (like me) play videos while doing other things then upcoming changes in #phoc to have apps always-on-top and keybindings to move windows into screen corners might be helpful:

#LinuxMobile #gtk #wlroots

A Video playing in #phosh with the video player staying always on top and being moved into the corners via keyboard bindings.

agx,

Forgot to add: toggling always-on-top will also get a visual indication in an upcoming release (likely 0.39.0).

Short demo showing how toggling always-on-top gives visual feedback (a flashing frame around the window)
