Day 2 of attempting to daily drive postmarketOS Linux on a OnePlus 6T:

At the moment, I'm still carrying an Android phone which provides a wifi hotspot.

The most important things have been established: Fediverse access (via Tuba) and messaging (via Fractal). After initial problems with the repo-version of Fractal, the Flatpak version works very well. I've already been messaging my wife, family and friends from Linux.

I also successfully purchased and downloaded a public transport ticket for February.

The battery life has been very very good. I think the automatic suspend is working it's magic. However, I'm not sure if this affects notifications yet.

hcal4,

@fell Im about a week in on my move to #droidian on my Thinkphone. I have found that gnome-web, though slower than firefox, has pretty good PWA support and that works well in #phosh. I also have nerd-dictation bound to a gnome keyboard short cut for vtt on demand. It a pretty good solution.

@fell how do u set up bridges with whatsapp and other iM apps, any tutorial?

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@Lulukaros You need a Matrix server that has the bridges enabled. Currently, https://www.beeper.com offers all bridges for free. Beeper offers their own app, but it works with any Matrix client.

You can also configure the bridges yourself, like I did, which is explained in detail here: https://docs.mau.fi/bridges/go/setup.html?bridge=whatsapp

If you want to install everything from scratch, I'd recommend YunoHost, it can even configure the bridges for you AFAIK.

@fell thank you 🤍🤍, my matrix server is the matrix.org, good to know i can use whatever client i want

@Lulukaros You're welcome. matrix.org doesn't offer any bridges, unfortunately.

florianherrengt,

@fell what’s the performance like? Is it responsive enough?

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@florianherrengt Yes, definitely. With 8 cores and 8 GB of memory it's a slightly overpowered smartphone, which helps overcome potential inefficiencies.

The UI maintains a stable 60 FPS with only occasional dropped frames. Scrolling and zooming in Firefox is very smooth. Application load times are comparable with desktop Linux.

But even on lesser capable SoCs like the Snapdragon 410 from 2015 it's certainly an enjoyable experience.

Overall, it's not quite as smooth as Android, but it's not far behind at all.

paavi,
@paavi@mastodontti.fi avatar

@fell Can you make calls and do SMS work though?

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@paavi It would work if I inserted my SIM card, but I have not tried it yet.

mpanhans,

@fell Messaging with Fractal, does that mean all your friends and family are on Matrix? Or is it bridging to other things?

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@mpanhans I am cheating a little because I had already set up bridges between Matrix and WhatsApp, Telegram and Discord.

krafter,
@krafter@fosstodon.org avatar

@fell Suspend stops most notifications (except SMS/MMS/Calls), though on my OnePlus 6 I get a decent day's worth of battery without suspend enabled, but YMMV

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@krafter I already have a solid habit of checking my phone every now and then. I might get away with leaving suspend enabled and just unlocking it from time to time to allow it to receive notifications.
