The Internet of Shit strikes again. Or did iOS 17 sneak up on them?
Major manufacturer of smart glucose monitor for people with Type I #diabetes (FreeStyle Libre 3) warns customers not to upgrade to #iOS 17 because it might break low glucose alarms that are a core functionality of the device.
3D Touch was one of those times when (very expensive) hardware was put into production, and software was forced to produce something—anything—to showcase it.
The 3D Touch strain gauge was impressive. It measured grams-force so accurately that you could use it as a scale. Problem was, humans aren’t that good at applying precise amounts of force, especially when operating a bar of soap single-handed.
In fact, having force sensitivity turned out to be detrimental to the UX because people would accidentally press too hard and trigger something unintended. It made operating a touch screen device harder for many people, especially those with less-than-excellent fine motor control.
> iOS 17.1 is coming this week to fix everything wrong with your iPhone, MacWorld
I hate it so, so much. Will it fix the problem where non-HID Braille displays don't work with VoiceOver? Will it fix that the Eloquence voice is quiet as crap? Will it fix the issue where sometimes even doing a double tap doesn't register correctly, leading students and people new to VoiceOver thinking they're the problem? Will it freaking fix any VoiceOver bugs? Oh fuck no, cause we blind people aren't a part of everyone, so our bugs aren't a part of everything that's wrong with "your" iPhone. Fuck you too MacWorld, fuck you too. I hate this type of "we know everyone's issues and we'll just downplay them all at once" kind of reporting. I hate this kind of normal-washing of everything. Fuck that shit with the pointiest thing available. Ugh!
I'm setting up an iPhone for a blind student that listens to radio station from her home country of Benin in Africa.
I'm having trouble finding an accessible radio app with a variety of stations from Benin. She is expecially interested in christian catholic content.
V Radio, an accessible app has the stations on android but is missing them on IOS.
An additional issue is that she doesn't have a credit card. So apps with constant full screen adds that are hard to dismiss with voiceover and have a subscription based add removal plan are problematic. A single payment is OK, I think I'll be able to gift her the app that way.
A website with good accessibility will also be good.
The nine months of waiting have paid off. We now have a fully accessible Hacker News client, complete with one flick per post/comment, rotor actions and somewhere down the line, three-finger swipes planned or already implemented. The app also offers the ability to compose posts, comment on threads, search for old stories and browse all of the HN's categories. So far, Octal is the best experience I've had accessing Hacker News. https://apps.apple.com/pl/app/octal-for-hacker-news/id1308885491 #Accessibility#Blind#iOS#OpenSource
Day 2 of more #PeerTube app design for my upcoming app called "PeerTuber".
Progress:
I'm hitting the public APIs returning data from a single instance
Coming up with a base design so I can work around it during development. The app will have multiple themes.
I've been focused on the home feed "look" over the last day but now I'm going to dive more into functionality and the other tabs such as Discover and Library.
Just posting again that I am still available for #freelance or full time employment. I’ve been doing #iOS development for 15 years, including at #Apple and am comfortable working on a team or doing entire apps.
I also know #RubyOnRails and have gotten quite good at it, which means I can work on backend and mobile together or separately if that’s what you need.
To be honest, I’m a real get. Someone should hire me.
Today is Christmas for #iOS devs with a passion for #accessibility! @sommer talk at @swiftconfto is now available! What a treat! Watch, enjoy, and share.
Lesen).
This is something interesting I saw over on Threads — people asking for Swift developers so that they can connect. I should have thought of that myself over here 😛
I would like to connect with other developers — if you do Swift, much better since I can talk at least halfway intelligently about that, but I’ve done development in a bunch of other languages including Python, Kotlin, Java, PHP, Perl, Pascal, xBase (if you really want to dig deep …).
But I’m looking for people who post about their current development journey — what you are working on, what issues you’re running into, what interests you etc. Doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner, expert, or somewhere in-between, I’m just interested in people who post and who want to have a conversation …
If you do post about this stuff regularly, ping me. I’m interested in following you 🙂
🚀 I'm happy and proud to launch Actions for Obsidian on iOS!
After several months of work, hundreds of hours of cumulative testing in TestFlight ✊🏼, a ton of customer feedback 🙏🏼, and several reviews by Apple we're finally here ✨
I'd be delighted if you'd check out its ~40 #ShortcutsApp actions for #Obsidian and see if & how it might fit into your #PKM life on #iOS and #macOS.
