"Searing heat and fire danger will quickly ramp up in #California and the West this week as a summerlike #HeatDome parks over the region. Thermometers will top triple digits for the first time this year in some locations as the early season heat wave sends daily records tumbling."
" The searing heat has already taken its toll. Since last weekend, multiple people in different parts of the US have died or have been hospitalized due to heat-related illnesses.
The worst of the #heat peaked Thursday for much of #California and the #Southwest, but unseasonably hot conditions will stick around in these areas and expand into the Pacific Northwest at least through the weekend. "
"A brutal #heatwave swept swathes of northwest #India on Friday, with maximum temperatures soaring to a scorching 47.4 degrees Celsius in southwest #Delhi's Najafgarh, making it the warmest place in the country."
"At least 85 people died of suspected heat stress and related issues in Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, [#India] in 24 hours, senior officials in these regions said on Friday, amid an unforgiving #heat spell that has pushed temperatures to unprecedented levels in many of these regions. LA Times: Earth breaks heat and CO2 records once again: ‘Our planet is trying to tell us something’
"...Humanity is ignoring major planetary vital signs as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels soar to all-time highs and Earth records its 12th consecutive month of record-breaking heat, international climate officials warned this week...."
Only 109F in Furnace Creek as of 11am.. possibly as high as 121F today (not sure on how often that sensor is able to update, it's sent via satellite). #DeathValleyNationalPark#NPS#heatwave#heat#CAwx
A streak of record-setting #heat that began last summer has now persisted for an entire year across the globe, researchers announced Wed, pushing #Earth closer to a dangerous threshold that the #world’s nations had pledged not to cross.
Temperatures surpassed the 1.5°C #warming threshold over the past year, & scientists warn they will again soon.
It’s not summer yet, but more than 17 million people in the western United States are already under excessive heat warnings as temperatures climb 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit above average, with large swaths of California expecting to see thermometers hit 108F (42.2C). Meteorologists are saying the scorching weather is caused by a heat dome, when high pressure traps heat over an area, making it hotter the longer it lasts. The BBC has more.
"Though #heat has killed hundreds of people in Maricopa County every summer for the past four years, the idea that heat can be deadly is newly shocking to many decision-makers.
📈 Record Heatwave: Mohenjo Daro in #Pakistan 's Sindh province experiences temperatures above 52°C (125.6°F), nearing the country’s all-time high, which according to my records, is 53.5°C again in Mohenjo Daro (26/05/2010)🔥
📈 Record Heatwave
India is currently experiencing a severe #heatwave, with temperatures in Delhi reaching a record high of 49.9 Celsius (121.8 Fahrenheit). This is an all-time high for the city, significantly above normal. 🔥
The IMD has issued a red alert for northwest India due to a severe heatwave, indicating a high risk of #heat illnesses and advising extreme caution, especially for vulnerable individuals.
New York Times: ‘New Territory’ for Americans: Deadly Heat in the Workplace
"In the coming months, this team of roughly 30 people at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to propose a new rule that would require employers to protect an estimated 50 million people exposed to high temperatures while they work. They include farm laborers and construction workers, but also people who sort packages in warehouses, clean airplane cabins and cook in commercial kitchens. "
"it is expected to meet stiff resistance from some business and industry groups, which oppose regulations that would, in some cases, require more breaks and access to water, shade and air-conditioning.
But even if the rule takes effect, experts say, the government’s emergency response system is poorly suited to meet the urgency of the moment....
Last year was the hottest in recorded history, and researchers are expecting another record-breaking summer, with temperatures already rising sharply across the Sun Belt...
The surge in deaths from heat is now the greatest threat to human health posed by climate change"
NOAA: A dangerous early season heat wave will cointue over South Texas, and intensify in South Florida, through Memorial Day. Record warm overnight temperatures in these areas will provide little to no relief to those without adequate or reliable cooling.
Heat impacts are likely to be highest in South Texas, where heat index readings approaching or exceeding 115 degrees are expected.
