Frankenstein Reflects the Hopes and Fears of Every Scientific Era—The Atlantic

Looking forward to MIT Press’ anotated edition. Theme of my study series Christian Sci-Fi Night with Professor K is “Playing God leads to trouble.” Note article’s point that Victor Frankenstein’s crime was hating and abandoning his creation, antithetical to God.

Today in Labor History March 29, 1797: William Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft. Godwin was an English journalist, philosopher and novelist. And one of the first modern proponents of anarchism. His most famous books are “An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice” and “Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams,” a mystery novel that attacks aristocratic privilege. Wollstonecraft was a British writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights, and is regarded by many as one of the founding feminist philosophers. Her most famous book was “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” (1792). She died 11 days after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.

Today in Labor History March 25, 1811: Oxford University expelled Percy Bysshe Shelley for publishing the pamphlet The Necessity of Atheism. Shelley was an English Romantic poet, radical in both his art and his politics. His poem "The Mask of Anarchy," which he wrote in 1819 after the Peterloo Massacre, is one of the first modern descriptions of nonviolent resistance. His admirers included Karl Marx, Gandhi and George Bernard Shaw. He was married to Mary Shelley, author of “Frankenstein.”

This "holiday" is dumb. PLEASE ignore all the stupid propaganda that insists you NEED someone else to make your life complete. You don't. But if you CHOOSE to allow a special someone to share any part of your life, I hope you are lucky enough to have had a Monster that has added some loveliness to your life & makes/made you happy, whether now, in the past, or in the future.

In today's wild movie news, Maggie Gyllenhaal is directing a remake of the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein, apparently? 🤯

It'll star Penelope Cruz as the bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein and Peter Sarsgaard playing a detective? Looks like they're starting production on it this year. That's gonna be a must-see for me 😂

Current 'It Boy' Jacob Elordi, wowing audiences with his performances in HBO's "Euphoria" and the recent film "Saltburn", will take on the role of the iconic Frankenstein's Monster in Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of the classic story for Netflix. Elordi is replacing Andrew Garfield who had to drop out after post-strike scheduling conflicts popped up. Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth are also starring.

"Science Fiction was invented by Hugo Gernsback" is the Young Earth Creationism of SF

It's objectively wrong, it's objectively unhelpful, it serves a dubious agenda, but it helps you identify the dickheads.

Watched from Netflix despite the very bad reviews from:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebel_Moon

Overwhelming pathos, extremely exaggerated bad guys (no women on the dark side as it seems) with not a single aspect to relate to.

Most obvious: lots of stuff from great films like (Akira ), , , ... and even .

You could play a drinking game: whoever spots a commonly accepted reference to a movie first doesn't have to drink, everybody else does.

Hey, does anyone know of any good books on Hammer Studios, particularly their gothic horror movies? I’m looking for in-depth material on the studio, the films, the actors… need not be comprehensive, but I’m not interested in simply a bunch of film synopses. Other than the autobiographies of Cushing and Lee I’m not really finding anything available that looks good.

In 2010 Sherlock Holmes became the world's go-to smart guy, replacing Albert Einstein.

Our imaginations may have bent from Science to fiction.

In Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein's monster loved to read. Yes that's right. And in the novel he speaks of his favorite reading matter, which includes Goethe, Plutarch, and Milton's Paradise Lost. Consider: if you haven't read these works, you are not as literate as Frankenstein's monster. Read what Frankenstein's monster (and by extension, Mary Shelley) said about these works:

Years ago, I bought a 2-DVD set labeled #Frankenstein, without really knowing what I got. Turns out, it's a 2004 mini series starring #AlecNewman, who is re-united with the late #WilliamHurt, who played Leto Atreides opposite his Paul in #FrankHerbertsDune.

Today I might finally watch this after owning it for many, many years.
