: "It’s important to understand why companies setting themselves up as open-source champions are reluctant to hand over training data. Access to high-quality training data is a major bottleneck for AI research and a competitive advantage for bigger firms that they’re eager to maintain, says Warso.

At the same time, open source carries a host of benefits that these companies would like to see translated to AI. At a superficial level, the term “open source” carries positive connotations for a lot of people, so engaging in so-called “open washing” can be an easy PR win, says Warso.

It can also have a significant impact on their bottom line. Economists at Harvard Business School recently found that open-source software has saved companies almost $9 trillion in development costs by allowing them to build their products on top of high-quality free software rather than writing it themselves." https://www.technologyreview.com/2024/03/25/1090111/tech-industry-open-source-ai-definition-problem/

I hate entangled chaotic yarn strands when working. But yesterday in the embroidery club, we were allowed to help ourselves from the treasure trove of leftover yarn from the festival. And when I saw this lichen colour, I couldn't resist. It will now be untangled and newly wound. Other people pay high prices for meditation courses! 😁 ommmm @embroidery

Yeah yeah, I know, we (i.e users) rarely exercise our right to read the code as they are sometimes large and complex and we might not even have the know-how as well. But unlike any proprietary code, in #FLOSS tools user have the complete right to inspect the code and then decide to use it or not. Good luck doing that with for instance Apple or Microsoft proprietary tools.

So let's also blame ourselves for not exercising our right to inspect such simple and small codebase.

How could we start a thing so people who are working on floss projects, like games, can get a regular income?

Over time, I've encountered many who are neuroatypical and/or disabled and/or disadvantaged in many ways—and yet they still contribute and create without income.

The Koffees and Patreons don't seem to work. It will take a more social collective.

#PeerTube - a certain international #Wikimedia organisation is looking for a PeerTube to do live #streaming. Any proposal?

At the moment I'm inclined to propose https://video.linux.it that is hosted by the Italian #GARR non-profit consortium, and also because we have sysadmins there for whatever question/issue, and #FLOSS activists.

Thanks for any suggested PeerTube for this context

Edited: not limited to PeerTube indeed. Anything FLOSS and user friendly would be lovely.

If you are using my Free and Libre OpenSource Software in your business:

  1. It's awesome that you chose a #FLOSS tool over using a proprietary alternative

  2. Don't ever come to my issue tracker complaining that 30+ of your employees are facing some issue and demand an immediate fix! Cough up some money and put it as a bounty on the issues you want to be fixed. Don't ever confuse my hobby and passion as my duty towards your business!! Grow up!

  3. Read the damn license.

MongoDB's SSPL (Server Side Public License) sounds like an extremely strong copyleft form of free software license. It sounds like MongoDB took the AGPL and made it much stronger.

Respected "open source" groups have rejected MongoDB's copyleft open source free software license, such as the OSI, RedHat, and Debian.

The criticism of the SSPL do not seem to recognize that it is a copyleft free software license. Is the OSI really a protector of copyleft free software? The politics of these organizations seem to leaning anarcho-capitalist "libertarian".

I don't believe the SSPL will harm any specific field of endeavor. Databases are used in all fields of endeavor. They are usually one of many provided cloud computing services. Cloud computing services are used in most every field of endeavor these days. Even my toothbrush has a cloud database.

By rejecting the SSPL, the OSI, RedHat, Debian have appeared to have ignored the copyleft freedoms that the SSPL guarantees.

FLOSS folks, is there any research into using image pulls / downloads (or even, yuck, GH stars) as a metric for number of installations/active users?

(Please don't reply with lists of pro/cons/limitations/constraints etc, got plenty of those myself; I'm specifically looking for existing papers or other publications, thank you! 🙏)
