New to both Vivaldi and Mastodon (the fediverse??)
Was tired of all the noise on Twitter, dropped Facebook a few years ago, Discord is also really noisy. I love FOSS and Games... still on Windows but I'm thinking about playing with Linux again now that gaming has progressed so much.
Been a while since I sent a message out into the ether like this.

In #Mastodon, go to "Explore" and then #explore some topics you are interested in by searching hashtags. You can follow hashtags and this might be a quick way for you to find others with similar interests.
On the Fediverse front, I recommend following @feditips, @tips.vivaldi.net, as well as @Vivaldi, to get you started!
Once a day seems the sweet spot to not get a ton of repeats. Try to use it every 3-4 hours and all you get is repeats. I scroll down looking at the time posted and only read the things more recent than I last looked. The computer should be able to do that for me.
Confession: I have been on that Other Site for the last few hours talking about Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon because ... well, this is a good example of why I do miss search here. I want to see what people are saying; I want to know the latest reporting; and, yes, I want to quote-tweet NYTimes Pitchbot. Now it's OK if the community of Mastodon decides it doesn't want to be a key place for news but I'd regret that. And I'm not speaking so much as a journalist but as news user.

"To get someone's attention" favoriting also raises the rank of a toot on the #Explore section (like boosts do). Some instances Explore-rank only local toots, but (I think) on larger instances federated toots are included.
The lack algos would make it reasonable to lengthen and widen the Explore-sortiment of boosted/favourited toots, to get "viral" toots more properly exposed.
There could be categories like:
Popular within the last:
6 hrs
24 hrs (default)
Week
Month
...
Sorting options for those could be e.g.:
🔃 By popularity (=boosts+favs)
🔃 By account name
🔃 By date/time
🔃 Random
...

Something that I am trying to do this year is #explore my own home. Each month I try something new. This month I finally went for a swim at the #beach. I found this rather lovely hidden gem #FingalBeach
I am not going to lie. The reason I ended up choosing it was because of the name. I got to visit #scotland last year but not #FingalCaves so I jumped at the chance to visit this.
And it was glorious. A quiet beach. A beach away from cities and tall buildings. I saw #Terns and baby bush turkeys. The water was insanely clear and the litter leaf Forrest was so much fun to walk through. I saw the #volcanic rock, #australianwildflowers and cook island. I have a list of things to research and write about and can't wait to start.
I'm sunburnt and exhausted but it was so much fun and I already have plans to go back.
Mastodon please help me with something. I'm a #trans guy with practically no trans guy friends. I know nothing about trans guys. I only know about James.

Newbies, Twitfugees, etc. Please, check the #Explore hashtag (should be in your right hand panel under Mastodon) regularly. Your sysadmin posts messages about functionality there. Most importantly, posts from the FediVerse that are gaining traction on your server show up there. Check it out!
