Or maybe not so minor, if you find yourself going "Hmmm..."
Do you use end-to-end encryption on a smart device? Do you rely on same for private communications in sticky, or possibly personally dangerous, situations? Maybe for banking, etc?
Do you also use a keyboard app in order to access characters otherwise unavailable on the inbuilt keyboard? Have you also allowed "Full access"?
Every key press you make can be, and likely is being, sent back to the app maker.
Check the details for your situation. You might want to stop using those fancy keyboard apps.
Digital security is not a crime. It's empowering for the +2 billion people who use encryption every day, all over the world.🔥
France, the EU, UK & US are currently attacking #encryption.
EDRi member @LaQuadrature shares that in France, you're seen as a criminal for using:
🔹encrypted instant messengers like Signal
🔹services like Protonmail to ensure email confidentiality
🔹VPN, Tor, Tails to protect privacy online
🔹techniques to protect against GAFAM surveillance
🔹training on digital protection
We're also pleased to have @cdteurope's Iverna McGowan moderate the discussion 🌟 & to hear from Noémie Levain, Legal Expert at @LaQuadrature, Beatriz Ramalho da Silva, Investigative Journalist at @lhreports & Bart Staszewski LGBTI+ activist, founder and chairman of Basta Fundacja 🤩
Ideally, this section would introduce a guarantee that this type of notice would not be imposed on providers of end-to-end encrypted communications. Instead it relies on questionable concepts such as “accredited technology” to wistfully wave some form of assurance that ‘this sort of thing’ is technically possible and it’ll all be fine, secure and appropriate.
Be under no illusion; “accredited technology” is no more reassuring than a lock which can be opened by a skeleton key.
It’s this aspect of the Online Safety Bill - the potential for undermining of end-to-end encryption - that we refute as completely flawed. It is not possible to have both secure communications and blanket surveillance, in the same way you cannot “have your cake and eat it.”
🇬🇧EU governments will approve the #ChatControl#CSAR message scanning regulation as early as 28 September, plans the new Spanish Council Presidency (which would prefer to ban #E2EE#encryption altogether).
🥁🥁🥁 Say hi to Messaging Layer Security! After 5 years in the making, the protocol has been published as RFC 9420. #MLS is the first standardized and fully specified end-to-end #encryption protocol. The specification is freely accessible, and its security has been analyzed in numerous academic publications.
We wrote a blog post giving a high-level overview of MLS, its practical applications, and why it matters. https://blog.phnx.im/rfc-9420-mls/
So an update from the debate in the House of Lords on the encryption busting #spyclause in the #onlinesafetybill. Labour withdrew their amendment that would have provided judicial oversight after the Government said they would not accept it. Lord Moylan withdrew his amendment that protected E2EE. Lib Dems force a division on their idea for ICO oversight but that fell 70 votes for and 178 against. #privacy#encryption
I'm the evil nerdy parent who won't let the 10 year old have any other messaging app apart from @SignalApp, how on earth do I persuade the other parents that they should take encryption and privacy seriously too and have their children install and use it...?
The Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol is a new encryption standard defined by the IETF (RFC9420), to provide a way for users of a messaging service to communicate securely without servers being able to eavesdrop on their conversations.
Matrix has been working on this with Cisco, Google, Mozilla, AWS, Wire and so on.
Matrix is working on making MLS decentralized too.
"We have come to a point where end-to-end encrypting all your private data and private communications is no longer an ethical option, but an ethical duty.
Imagine a new law was being discussed in your country to make it mandatory that all buildings have glass walls. All houses would be transparent. The (stated) goal of the law is to make it harder for criminals to hide their wrongdoings. [...]"
You may not notice all the daily encrypted interactions you have, but you surely would notice if your private data was accessed because of a lack of strong encryption.
🇬🇧 For today's #GlobalEncryptionDay, I would like to remind you how important secure #encryption is for our digital privacy. Without encryption, our communication is no longer confidential. Let’s oppose indiscriminate #chatcontrol and stand up for a secure internet! 💻🔒 https://chatcontrol.eu
