We attended Real World Crypto where @raphaelrobert talked about how far MLS has come since RWC 2019.

Highlights:

  • Post-quantum resistance and how easy it is to upgrade from current schemes
  • Deployment in existing products like Webex and Discord
  • Prospective integration in platforms, like Firefox and Android
  • Metadata protection in MLS
  • Using MLS as a general purpose key establishment mechanism beyond messaging in e.g.: video conferencing, password managers, hypervisors, enclaves, etc.

WhatsApp shared first details on how they will comply with the #DMA. We are critical of the Signal protocol, as there has never been a complete specification that allows others to implement the protocol securely. This has been one of the main reasons to develop MLS. We co-initiated the MIMI working group to build a protocol around MLS to enable #interoperability between different messengers in a secure and privacy preserving way.

MLS is the first standardized and fully specified end-to-end encryption protocol. It brings substantial improvements in performance and security compared to existing protocols. We have been involved in the design and development of the MLS protocol since the very beginning.

We ended 2023 with a talk at . @raphaelrobert and Konrad presented the new standard for end-to-end encryption, Messaging Layer Security (MLS). The room was packed and some people couldn't attend in person – luckily the talk is now online and can be watched again.

Check out our blog post where we examine the push notification problem and address potential misconceptions!

In the wake of recent reports by @Reuters, @TechCrunch, @404mediaco, and others on via push notifications, many people have been confused about reports about it and how it affects their own when using messengers anonymously.

We have been involved with the original investigation by @netzpolitik_feed.

After #chatcontrol, lawmakers are now trying to mandate government-controlled certificates in web browsers. These changes radically expand the capability of EU governments to surveil their citizens by ensuring cryptographic keys under government control.

Along with 400 experts and researchers from around the world, our Head of Research Konrad Kohbrok has signed an open letter calling on the EU to abandon its #eIDAS plans to break the trust on the web.

This weekend, @raphaelrobert and @cityroler are joining the Global Gathering of TeamCommunity (@article19). We are looking forward to connecting with digital rights defenders and other like-minded people who are interested in secure messaging.

On Saturday (September 16), the project booth #3 will be all about secure, private, and decentralized messaging. From 2-4 pm, we want to hear from you what you miss in secure messaging and give you a sneak peek at what we are currently building.
