Here is a good problem, how do I set a domain that gives students in my Fall 2023 class access to use something like LetsEncrypt? If they spin up a server in <cloud market>, what domain/interface can I use thats easy in an environment like that? What I use personally works for me, but I'm not giving 16 students the ability to mess around in my domain ;-) Suggestions? Is this even possible? I am thinking something like certbot, or caddy server for the lab. #domain #ssl

The has a new logo…

💕

Yes, that‘s it, the two hearts emoji, that’s the new logo.

“Wait, what?! That’s not a logo, anyone can copy and use that!”

Sure, go right ahead. We’re not playing the same game as Big Tech with their trademarks and whatnot :)

PS. I just updated the placeholder site at https://small-web.org with the new logo and the Small Web protocol will use it as the namespace. e.g., my.small-web.site/💕/id → my identity (ed25519 public key for the cryptography nerds) :)

PPS. I love that the logo renders differently on different platforms. It’s the meaning that matters, not the form.

PPPS. small-web.org will be running a Domain¹ instance once Domain is ready. And Domain itself is a Kitten² app.

PPPPS. Special thanks to @leaverou for, among other things, the nifty little emoji-as-favicon hack. If you want to see how it works, view source on the page.

I got the domain transfer auth code from #Gandi for my #domain only to find later that none of the registrars that I wanted to switch to, support that TLD 😒☹️🤷‍♂️

Welp, seems like Google Domains was sold to SquareSpace.

I used Google because they offered a fair, regional price.

What are some good #domain registrars out there that charge a fair price?

stevendrowe, to random

I notice some websites in #canada do not accept my .ca #domain when registering with them. In fact, the only providers they accept are Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook for which I don’t like using for privacy reasons. I wonder why this is?

According to Spamhaus Microsoft and Google are among the Abuse Support ISPs.

Quick heads up if you’re playing with Kitten, I’ve just removed the option to return an object (with title, icon, libraries, etc., properties) from your page routes now that we have the new <page> tag that lets you do that from within html tagged template strings not just from your pages but also from fragments and components.

(So we have one way of doing things that works consistently everywhere now.)

Just updated Domain to use the new <page> tag in Kitten and I love how much nicer it is.

It’s great to be able to include htmx¹ and apply hx-boost² (think of it as magic ajax) to the whole app from the base layout component.

Also love being able to specify, for example, that Alpine.js³ should be included on the page from a component that uses it.

I just added .zip and .mov TLD to my domain management section as global blacklist.

I simply added a regex such as "zip$" , or "mov$" (without quotes)

Why? https://medium.com/@bobbyrsec/the-dangers-of-googles-zip-tld-5e1e675e59a5

Works nicely!

I do rather love being able to run tail¹ on my database tables² as I work on building Domain³ with Kitten⁴ ;)

(JSDB keeps tables in an append-only JavaScript log which are read fully into memory when the database is opened. And yes, if you noticed the class names, you can store custom objects.)

Okay, so #domain names. I've been with #gandi.net all along because they started out with a great track record on privacy - and indeed they refused to share my wallet name with the govt when I was being investigated under porn censorship laws. But gandi have now been bought by a less ethical corp, and they've doubled renewal prices.

What's the procedure for transferring ownership of a domain to your own account at a different registrar? Do I wait for it to expire first or what?

Blocklist update for admins:

https://codeberg.org/oliphant/blocklists/src/branch/main/blocklists/mastodon

There's now a mastodon subfolder in the repo for all blocklists, converting file headers to proper mastodon format.

This should allow for better imports when downloading and importing the file through the mastodon UI.

oliphant,

Got tired of waiting for an update to export these things in a directly-importable-by-mastodon-native-format from fediblockhole, so broke out my shell scripting.

Note: I'm a bash script noob, so be gentle

Anyone here know anyone from Paddle that you can put me in touch with? (Or share your experience with them?)

I’m reconsidering whether Stripe is the right solution for the initial payments option in Domain (https://codeberg.org/domain/app) or whether it makes more sense (and would be easier for folks who want to run their own Domain instances and become Small Web hosts) if I integrated a Merchant of Record (MoR) solution instead.

#SmallWeb #commerce #Domain #merchantOfRecord #MoR #stripe #paddle #tax

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

Right, so I signed up with Paddle and with FastSpring (also a merchant of record) and I don’t think Paddle is going to work as you can’t create subscription plans via their API. In FastSpring you can so I’m going to continue to looking at that. So, to update my query:

Anyone know anyone at FastSpring they can introduce me to or have any experiences with them they can share with me?

(I may still end up going with #Stripe.)

Thanks!

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

I’m sure you’re all riveted to hear my next niche micro-update on finding a payment solution to integrate into #Domain¹ but I’m actually reconsidering #Paddle. The more I think about it, the less custom logic there is in Domain to handle payment providers the better. A very lightweight abstraction over embedding a #payment form and handling #webhooks should make it easier to add others in the future at the cost of more setup in the payment provider itself.

¹ https://codeberg.org/domain/app

#SmallWeb

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

The initial integration of Paddle into Domain is now complete. I’m happy with how it turned out.

Now the only (“only” he says) bit left is reimplementing the provisioning and setup of Small Web servers running Kitten (or Kitten apps).

It‘s getting there…
