It should be clear now that it was and remains a catastrophic mistake for people to view privately owned social media platforms as any kind of public resource. People didn't know better a decade ago. They have no excuse now.
I'm going to disagree with that last bit - people did know better a decade ago, at least some of us. Social spaces on the net long predated the arrival of big tech and commercial social sites - we used email and #newsgroups and the Unix talk and finger protocols and #IRC and other things to keep in touch with people, from the person at the terminal next to yours, to someone at a university halfway around the world.
We warned about the big #commercial sites when they arrived.
Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.
We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.
Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.
Without maintaining and restoring #ecosystems and #biodiversity, seemingly good projects like planting large numbers of #trees can be worse for the #environment than those trees not being planted at all.
#Greenwashing and #commercial interests often harm the planet by focusing on one thing, rather than on Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.
