Terrace done. Already in use, too.

Been fun, although my back and knees have been aching at times.

Not bad for a first timer, I think. Hope they like it and the company installing the wheelchair ramp don't make a mess of things. They have certain norms that make the ramp absolutely ginourmous - 7m plus a platform, longer than the entire terrace.

Another side of the terrace, here with the small two step stairs leading off it. The stairs are cladded all around and already cluttered with some tools from the other building project and a bag of charcoal. A can of beer rests on the handrail.
Inside view of the tall corner of the terrace, with some garden furniture and a birdhouse. More beer on the table hints at a terrace opening event.

Take heed my advice.

If you are getting someone in to do some work for you check out their credentials, see if they have photos of their work and just be a bit more weary before parting with your cash as you may end up with this and your building inspector will not like you.

Wild rabbit observing Little Free Library work at my lunch break.

ai6yr,

The doors were cabinet doors for a dresser, I broke the corners to get out the wood, and inserted plexiglass inside. The corner breaking process was ugly, but it worked for this project: I suspect just cutting the corners apart with a table saw would be cleaner. Earlier.photo here. #diy #carpentry

I fell off the wagon... or am I back on my BS?

Either way, I'm making another board.

OK, starting to make more standardized pieces. I took a pawn experiment I liked and measured the dimensions. Now I'm recreating the pieces.

One challenge: I can't figure out the exact height of the saw blade, so I'm measuring by 1/3rd cranks on the elevation wheel. The base is 0 cranks (no cut), the neck is 5/6, 4/6, and 3/6 cranks, and the "head" is 1/6 cranks.

A set of roughly similar pawn shapes.

I got a table saw and have started to experiment with box joints!

Next, finger joints!

I may end up making a new chess board...

Lunch break, more progress building a DIY 19 inch rack, question for the IT folks out there: inset mounting rails, yay or nay, or should I mount the rails flush in front? Exactly 19 inch gap. #diy #networking #carpentry

I forgot this one.

I fitted this on Saturday morning. My customer needed the staircase quite quickly. I managed to get this from measured to installed in 7 days.

Notice there’s no balustrade on the left of the winder because I factored in room for built in storage on their landing.

Can someone please tell me what kind of joinery should be used for a table like this when the table height is about 42 in?

Had a good day at work, nice refurbishment, great customers, used an artists pen instead of a pencil and surprisingly it made a difference.

And the best part was that the customers had paid before I'd even drove down the road.

October was an awful month for me, and November as always really sucks. Sun set at 4 pm today and it will only get darker + next week we expect severe frost.
But …
It is now only more or less 1 month until the winter solstice, Dec 22 at 4.27 am (UTC+1), and today my garden was prepared for winter.
This is what it looked like this morning …

Today I’m cooking … “Pressylta”, typical Swedish x-mas food & the one you can buy is both expensive & less spiced. I’ve also prepared an outdoor “fridge/freezer”, lined with styrofoam on the inside - a true recycling project, the other half of an old music case for records & vinyl-player. The top half is a bench in the hallway. Strangely enough I did not have a proper size hatch to protect food from magpies, squirrels & mice.

What I've been doing the last two weeks (whenever the weather was benign):

Building a straight terrace on completely wonky foundations. In hindsight, it might've been faster to build a new foundation, but also messier and less fun!

The old terrace had been built haphazardly and from untreated wood and rotted away in a few years until someone crashed through it.

I re-used much of the surviving parts for the frame and the handrails.

First, attach a wooden frame to align the X/Y axis with the house, enlarging the terrace slightly in the process. This is made from reclaimed wood from the old terrace.
Next, a new support grid, levelled with a laser leveller (which only works well on cloudy days/evenings). Also some posts for the handrail/wind protection have been attached to the new frame.
Planks installed and posts trimmed to length. It's starting to look like a terrace. The wood impregnation has lightened a little in parts, which happens to match the house paint well (pure accident).

My new #woodworking #hobby is helping greatly to keep my mind off the dumpster fire chaos of each day. This Nesting Box is for #Goldfinches and is headed to a friend’s yard. I'm stoked to make these for my friends here in #Eugene - my tiny way of giving back to wild songbirds.

Fit and finish is solid to last for years, but the build is by no means high-end #carpentry. I’m not your guy to do that fine wainscoting install in your McMansion. But you CAN probably park your car on these boxes.

Tomorrow morning it’s 7 days until the autumnal equinox and I got a photo report from the paint shop. My sofa is now dissembled. I really wish I had an indoor workshop-so envious…
The bench for the hallway is finally finished and stained, remains transparent spray lacquer, but I had to take it indoors last night. Even the wood glue refused to dry. That’s how humid it’s been. Better today, but sure a few showers-and COLD🥶

My bench for the hallway is finally in place. Just have to wait for the lacquer to dry completely before the birdseed can move into it instead of filling the stairs.
It’s been a long journey interrupted by #rainy #weather
I’m finishing off the hallway makeover by antique treatment of a few too new and too shiny brass hooks for the wall - I’ve read up on this so lighting the grill
