It's 's and Health Awareness Month. This study re: the benefits of healthy eating & exercise isn't claiming can be reversed, but the data goes under the category of, it can't hurt. For those concerned about health (who isn't?), get sleep, if hearing is an issue, get hearing aids, try not to socially isolate (can be hard for us introverts), & get treated for depression. These won't , but may slow it down. Take care of your🧠

The brain can store a lot of data, but pollution will actually mess up your head in a bad way.

Air pollution exposure tied to heightened dementia risk, by Eric W. Dolan June 3, 2024

"...Recent research has suggested that environmental factors, such as air pollution, may contribute to the development of dementia. Air pollution, already known to cause cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, might also promote brain inflammation and accelerate cognitive decline. This study aimed to investigate these potential links in Denmark, a country with relatively low but still significant air pollution levels..."

Now imagine the pollution levels in the US, and how much more illness we have because of it.

The brain can store nearly 10 times more data than previously thought, study confirms, by Emily Cooke
published 6/4/24

Scientists harnessed a new method to precisely measure the amount of information the brain can store, and it could help advance our understanding of learning.

"...Measuring the precision of synaptic plasticity has proven difficult in the past, as has measuring how much information any given synapse can store. The new study changes that.

To measure synaptic strength and plasticity, the team harnessed information theory, a mathematical way of understanding how information is transmitted through a system. This approach also enables scientists to quantify how much information can be transmitted across synapses, while also taking account of the "background noise" of the brain..."

June is #Alzheimer's and #Brain Health Awareness Month. I wrote a #book, w/the amazing #neurologist #Dr.BruceMiller, to honor my father who died of #EarlyOnset Alzheimer's. Our #memoir has a lot of information about the brain, thanks to #Dr.Miller. My brain broke when my Dad's did, & the sections I wrote are about trying to put it (& my broken heart) back together. We each bring something different to the story of my father's Alzheimer's, & hope telling it helps others.

As if the decision to withdraw life support for patients with traumatic brain injuries weren't excruciating enough, a small modeling study suggests that it has at times been withdrawn too early. The American College of Surgeons recommends full ICU treatment for at least 72 hours. But there are no guidelines in the U.S. as to which patients should be taken off life support and when. How the Brain Processes Different Components of Language - Moving beyond neural localization of language. Posted May 28, 2024

"...This is in line with recent ideas about a "cortical mosaic" architecture for linguistic structure within overlapping portions of posterior temporal and inferior frontal cortices for processing demands that bias syntactic and semantic computations, whereby, for example, effects of composition can be found within a narrow strip of tissue within the broader lexicality-sensitive cortical sites (a spatial mosaic), or where different demands of sentence-level inferential semantics can be detected over closely overlapping temporal windows within a small area of cortex (a spatiotemporal mosaic)..."

Every time scientists are able to understand another biological process linked to Alzheimer's disease, it offers another way that they might eventually be able to treat or prevent it. New research has shed light on the protein contactin-4 and its relationship with the amyloid precursor protein (APP), which could help unravel the mystery of the disease. Then they showed them images where their body had been morphed to look more masculine or more feminine. The results support the natural order of gender identity.

@jeffjarvis. I canceled my #Post subscription after one too many bothsides articles. However, if you have a moment and a spare gift article, would you please post it? #Brain health, specifically #dementia, is a profoundly important issue to me (my father died of #early-onset #Alzheimer's). I post #ChaunceyDeVega's #Salon pieces, esp. those with #Dr.JohnGartner whenever he covers this issue and how #doctors and #neurologists are speaking out, sometimes. Thank you.

"Dreams Dull the Distress of Emotional Memories"

https://neurosciencenews.com/dreaming-emotional-memory-26099/

"Dreaming helps prioritize and diminish the severity of emotionally charged memories. Participants who reported dreaming had better recall and were less reactive to negative images.

The research suggests that dreams actively transform emotional responses by reducing next-day emotional reactivity. This could lead to interventions that enhance dreaming to aid emotional processing."
