When you are typing text on a computer, after every character entered there should be small period of time, say 0.5 seconds, in which it is not possible for another application to pop up a dialog that steals input focus.
Make everything else fucking wait until I have finished typing. I promise you there is nothing so urgent that I will be glad my focus was yanked away in the middle of a word.
I've been a #Qobuz subscriber since last year, and in general I like it, though its Android app's performance has been wonky.
But today was the first time I tried to purchase and download an album. 18 tracks. After purchase, the site tells me if I want to download it, I need to use their "downloader app for #Linux". Grrr, but OK, that's better than downloading 18 files one-by-one.
You guessed it, Mac and Windows are the only options on the software install page. AAARGH
Why not JUST GIVE US A .ZIP with all the files in it? #Bandcamp does this, and for God's sake even the moribund eMusic, which used to force its customers to use a downloader (which BTW was available for #linux),
eventually forsook that practice and went back to just providing a .zip.
My biggest annoyance with SwiftUI has to be that so many modifiers are for a View, but there’s so many cases where they don’t work. Like .refreshable. It seems to only work on List. It does not work on Chart or VStack. If a modifier does not work on a certain view where it is perfectly legal I want to have it documented and see a warning when running in Xcode. This isn’t rocket science. Having code randomly do nothing without any warnings is extremely bad design.
Today’s #BadDesign: No beveled edges on ports -- Aim carefully when you plug that cable in, you're not getting any help! This is a minor annoyance on my MacBook - Apple likes a clean look - but ultimately not a huge problem because the ports are easily accessible and visible. Still, a little help would be nice. Door locks have had this forever.
The pic is from the back of my monitor - a Lenovo. Bad enough that the port isn't beveled, but having the opening in the case that is larger than the actual HDMI port means that you will get the cable in the cavity, but then it will get caught on the edge of the actual port. Again, no help here. I know where the port is, but reaching up blindly to try to get the cable in was almost doomed to failure as it just. wouldn’t. go. in.

I just bought fancy new bluetooth earbuds and this time I hunted down a brand with physical buttons but also noise cancellation and everything else— best decision ever.
airpods have that “squeeze” thing— sony WHXM4 had touch controls… but now I have a vol+ and vol- button! I’m mad with power. The only thing even better would be an actual potentiometer volume knob.
@veronica@futurebird I feel that - I bought a pair of earbuds (Anker, I think) that have the main button right where you would push on the bud to better secure it in your ear. #BadDesign
@c0dec0dec0de@futurebird One of my beefs about the radio in my car - the volume is software controlled, so when I start the car, the radio can come on at high volume and there’s nothing I can do about it (not even shut the radio off) until we’re through whatever boot up process the car is doing. My thinking is that the radio shouldn’t come on at all until I have some control over it. #BadDesign
Today in #BadDesign - Saw this at my sister’s place in Calgary. The utensil drawer in the kitchen is inside a bigger drawer. To get a utensil, you must first pull out the big drawer, and then reach in and pull out the smaller utensil drawer. The utensil drawer does not come out by default.
Crime: Making a frequent task require more than twice as much effort than it should. Get the thumbscrews.
How is it that modern coffee makers are designed so badly?
I’m referring to the particular experience of pouring water from the pot–which has a rounded spout edge so water doesn’t exit cleanly and instead also dribbles down the side of the pot onto the counter–into the water reservoir, which appears to be just some big backstage area without a decent pour zone (obviously sacrificed for the sake of the external appearance of the device). So there I am, aiming carefully, while all the time water is collecting on my counter from the dribbles. And all before my first f#%k!ng morning coffee…
On the other hand, I am amused by how many hashtags relating to squirrels come up when I type #UI 😄
Typical chaos on a #Swiss#Electrical wall outlet. This is the way, one definitely does not want it but due to #BadDesign specs of #Power adapters and plugs, you’ll find things like this somewhere in every #Household. This is a huge #DesignFailure.
