It takes years to go from concept to reality for a new apartment building. But we have been increasing construction, and a number of new units have been coming online this year.

When I look at this graph, I see the bottom after the 2008 financial and foreclosure crisis. But it also looks to me like we haven't been building enough since the late 1980s:

In my neighborhood there are a number of what I assume to be old corner stores converted into apartments. I saw this last week and I just found the door really striking. I never noticed the paint on the top of the columns made to look like plants. Such a nice small detail!

There was another and it’s like everyone’s apartment just has an Ethernet cable that runs to some sort of router/switch that somehow provides everyone Ethernet. No idea how that works or if that’s how big apartments do it now, or how safe/secure it is.

Anything like that would be run through a NAT router where the uplink side is considered “Wild West” or whatnot.

It’s getting so hard for me to keep up with this stuff.

OZZY OSBOURNE Will Rent You His Los Angeles Apartment, But It Ain't Cheap

We Found That Could Be Using Algorithms to Fix Prices. Now Lawmakers Want to Make the Practice Illegal.

After a ProPublica investigation, U.S. senators introduced a bill to curb “price fixing” linked to rent-setting software.

“Setting prices with an algorithm is no different from doing it over cigars and whiskey in a private club,” said one sponsor.

@ProPublica

The company that runs the complex where we are now uses this to set every day.

I've been the daily advertised price for a while now and the variations of the price for the same unit from day to day should be illegal. Example: Over the course of just four days, I tracked rent prices of three-bedroom units go down $310 on a Saturday and go up $205 the following Tuesday. How does that happen?

remediation.

Few snaps of this old petrol station, before it becomes 8 three story dwellings. Sorry to see the old fixtures go, but excellent to see the feasibility of converting otherwise wasted land. Although good luck goes to the developers: Remediation of these sites can often take years and cost upwards of $1 million. And when the owners of these small, privately owned stations have gone into liquidation (sometimes decades ago!) the cost of cleanup falls to the next site owner. Consequently many of these take a long to sell, becoming wasted land and eye sores in the meantime.

TDP4, to coffee

Three years ago I took a bare wall above our coffee/tea nook we had and transformed it with a pile of command strip hooks, and usb powered fairy lights.

It looked wonderful and my now wife @Rach loved it. But alas, command strips are not forever and they slowly let go more and more over time.

Today I updated it with a piece of paneling, screws, and some hooks. Definitely and improvement!

This is the updated version with a dark paneling, screws and metal screw hooks. all the holes were measured and pre-drilled.

A relationship ptnr, is who might have originated the biz relationship & might handle bills, but isn’t necessarily the lead handling the work.

So, when they built my apartment, they put in sliding wardrobe doors along the back wall of my bedroom. Great! There's room for wardrobe modules behind it, with space to spare.

However ...

Notice on the photo that the first wall stud, which by standard is 60 cm from the corner, has the power switch and outlet boxes on the left side. A wardrobe module is 58 cm deep. It therefore does not fit!

Why, oh, why didn't they just put the boxes on the other side???
