Anyway, thanks to the invention of RCBOs, I'm not going to be a footnote in Tim Hunkin's EMF talk on the history of electrocution this weekend.
Is your hedge trimmer truly broken-in without at least one waterproof splice on the power cable?
(I have a rule, maximum one splice: if the cable gets cut again, it gets shortened or replaced)

One sure-fire way of ensuring an RJ45 is correctly terminated, is to forget the strain relief boot.

@Extelec Aside: I need to find a link to the premade protection strain-relief boot we used on three-conductor (plus neutral and ground) armored cables. Heat shunk with a torch. (Ethernet 24AWG 150V rating, versus 500kcmil 15kV rating.) One of the largest strain reliefs I’ve seen, mining trailing cables might be larger tho.

Gigantic or tiny - it’s always important to have strain relief.

question for the people that hoards computer cpus, how do you store them? i use plastic boxes but the legs still bend sometimes when I'm looking around and i fell like there must be a better way

@kiwa Isn’t there a black or pink static-safe foam you can use? Stick the pins (legs) in there, cover it in a static-safe (pink or dark gray) bag, tape it up?

(Might need something like a desiccant if you’re in a really high humidity area too.)

TLDR: draw.io is groovy for drawing diagrams.

A while back I went through the tutorials for Inkscape and was fairly impressed.

Now that I sat down to draw some box-and-arrow data structure diagrams, I found that (a) the knowledge had fallen out of my head and (b) it was nearly impossible to figure out how to do things by playing with the program. I probably spent the better part of an hour trying to center text vertically within a box. A DuckDuckGo search was useless, because I kept getting videos explaining how to do much fancier things like getting text to lie along a curve. The only source that explained the procedure was, surprisingly, ChatGPT.

Clearly this is far too powerful a tool for my task -- like slicing butter with a chainsaw.

I looked for open source alternatives and alternativeto.net reminded me of draw.io. I had used this before, but been annoyed that it insisted on saving things within Google drive and manually drilling through my directory structure each time. Fortunately, there is now a standalone desktop app that lets me save things locally. It feels much friendlier -- poking around for a few seconds tends to find what I need.

@peterdrake I found Draw.io to be a really useful replacement for Visio - maybe even superior to Visio.

I thought you could always save and open offline with Draw.io too - was that changed recently?

Busily spending part of my weekend enjoying one aspect of my job at the Archive - sorting through uploads of a certain type - in this case, anything calling itself a "Manual". There are hundreds of people uploading a single manual for the most obscure of things, and the style and breadth is amazing.
