On occasion I have seen the younger barred owls out in the open with a parent nearby.
Barred owls are covered in white down when they hatch, which is replaced with longer feathers by 2 to 3 weeks. Juvenile barred owls gradually develop the same pale buff-brown and white coloration of adults, but with less distinct markings.
I took this shot a few minutes after the last one and it may be regretting what it ate. I ended watching it for a bit before getting a drink and then flying off.
Barred Owl (Strix varia) fledglings perched in a Bigleaf Maple tree. The calls they are making in this photo are "begging calls" and are "suggestions" to mom that maybe food can come more quickly, please?
This little male spent days trying to get into our sitting room, through a closed window. I don't know how he didn't smash his beak. I think he was seeing his reflection in the window and trying to defend his territory from what he saw as a rival male.
For todays #WildlifeWednesday I have a close up of a pelican for you :) Way back when I was travelling in Australia, this was my first encounter of a pelican, he/she was sitting on a metal rod near a lake in Adelaide. They are such huge birds compared to most birds here 😅
Burrowing Owl, Brown Pelican, Mockingbird, Killdeer. Available as fine art prints. Here is my shop ➡️ https://society6.com/elizabethkennenwatercolors 💙 #Society6 offers excellent quality, yet my shop is temporary. I'm looking for a company that promotes a style of artwork such as mine. Artists, if there is printing/decor company you're happy with, please advise.
This little girl will be making her grand entrance later on today!
In the meantime, here’s a sneak peak of her running in to steal all your hearts. We’re excited to introduce you to her properly and to explain why she is known as the Nursery’s Valentine 💚🐘
