A very young Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) eating Hawkesbeard stems in a backyard garden. This was a very nice subject to come across while testing a brand new zoom lens. :)
A portrait photo of a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron. As they age, they will develop the beautiful steely blue and black plumage and yellow crown of an adult. This species population is considered stable but loss of habitat by development and habitat degradation could change that status.
This is the first (and so far only) monarch butterfly we have spotted this year. We used to have so many here I managed to photograph a lot nearby. (Link: https://www.elliekennard.ca/monarchs/ ) But let us celebrate this one today! It was resting in the evergreen tree on our property.
Have a lovely Wednesday, FediFriends.
From the "A day late & a dollar short Dept."..
This was to be a Wildlife or Witty Wednesday post but life got in the way. So, now it's Thankful Thursday, I guess.
8/17/23 Open tonight until at least 9p. No open containers, please.
Brown Pelicans are a welcome staple around Florida beaches and waterways. I photographed this juvenile standing on the shore one morning while he was posing nicely for his picture. Added complimentary textures for an artistic presentation.
A Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) adult preening. The red/brown coloration (vs. their usual grey) comes from iron in the mud they rub onto their feathers during the preening process. More photos of the adults here, and a few of the chick they were rearing:
Photographed this little flock of sandpipers early one morning at the beach. Love to watch them scurrying up and down the beach in unison, dodging the waves as they lap the shoreline.
Here's an Allen's Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin), taking a sip out of Scarlet Larkspur (Delphinium cardinale). Photographed in Del Mar, California at the end of June 2023.
This was an easy photo to get because the little birds are extremely attracted to the bright red flowers. One just needs to wait! :)
Vertical photo, might need a tap/click (but hey, the 16:9 thumbnail doesn't look bad either;-)
On Christmas morning in 2021 I went to the local park to see what was out and about. One of my fellow photographer friends was there and alerted me to the deer in the woods.
I was able to capture this tender moment between the two.
