‘Honzōgan’ (true inlay), is central to Japanese metal-working. With many different metals and other materials, they carefully insert pre-cut designs into perfectly matching recesses, using just pressure and a small lip of material to attach them. #japan#katana#museum#swords#metalwork
The King of England lies dying and one of his sons has been exiled. A princess has vanished. Plague stalks the land and the Treasury has been plundered.
NOW is the time for strange women lying in ponds to distribute swords to form the basis of government.
New/used book arrived and a classic, but space is getting tight! I think I may be able to just fit this in on the upper arms & armor shelf... #medieval#armor#swords
Everything seems to be on fire this week, so I want to focus on the good things. This is one of them: my sharpening belts should arrive tomorrow!
I need to learn how to sharpen swords. I attended a sharpening workshop last year and bought a finishing machine, and now I'll have a chance to actually practice this new skill. I am excited and nervous...
I played a few video games this morning and had a good look around #PAXAus. Having a rest before getting ready for my play test this afternoon. So many people walking around with an armful of swords and other assorted weapons. I must design a boardgame about collecting the best weapons at a con.
You’ll see discussions of this among book collectors, where earlier printings can be more valuable...
Or, yanno, among people like me who are just TOTAL DORKS
In fact this is the first time one of my books has had a second printing (YAY!), so I might actually go out and buy it so I can have a copy without the “1” there 🤣🤣🤣
But! What’s selling right now is the first printing still — it’s not sold through YET, it's just going fast — so if YOU want to be a book collecting dork and get a hardcover with the “1” in it, you still can!
A fascinating #BBC compilation of clips from the 1960s onwards. Expect some cool #Music, fascinating traditions, #Swords, #Vikings, #Magic, #Hauntology, #Occultism, and a bit of nudity! Guest starring the #MariLwyd, and what can be best described as a ritual punch-up between two villages.
If you are a fan of Japan 🇯🇵, Japanese history, samurai or just a good novel, then I suggest reading Miyamoto Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa.
It is a novelized recount about the life of Japan’s 🇯🇵 greatest swordsman & it starts out with (slight spoiler warning)..
..the ending of an epic battle! What I loved about this book is that it highlights the cunning of battle tactics of a swordsman at a time crossbows & hand guns were beginning to enter history.
Tactics on how to fight a group, when to draw a weapon, how to avoid trouble & how to engage close friends trying to kill you (yeah, it gets really crazy!).
This book is not without controversy as there are some scenes/events that take place where you will hate Musashi (I will not spoil that here).
But overall the book does a great job of humanizing a legend, one who mastered & popularized two sword fighting techniques (ironically in the middle of a battle! Sheesh!).
Sword fighting aside, there is also some excellent philosophy discussed, which I will not get into much here. A great read if you are into books—provided you can stomach the violence (there is a lot!!!).
Bit of a departure from the Namii project this week as I return to the project that started this whole artistic odyssey, my Tarot Ponies series!
Part 35/78! This is the traditional piece, the Queen of Swords. The card itself, in upright position at least, represents independent and unbiased judgement, clear boundaries, and direct communication. This very much reminds me of post reformation Starlight Glimmer, after she's had a chance to address her demons.
The Swords arcana is interpreted as elemental air, so while I might have chosen a pegasus in her place, I instead opted for an airy background and scene.
Lots more art on my DeviantArt profile, and I stream my art both digital and traditional on Twitch! Both links are in my profile, would love it if ya'll came by and said hi tomorrow night!
