Spoiler: surgical infections mostly come from patients' own microbiomes (and article is not about covid).
This makes me wonder about people with eczema, which is related to higher-than-usual staph bacteria levels on the skin. Do eczema patients have commensurately higher rates of surgical infections?
I'm curious if any medical or science people here have insight on that.
This year, there will be a nova, before or by September, as bright as the North Star.
After peak brightness it will remain bright enough, for several days, to observe with binoculars.

[1/2] Surprising findings in brain research 🧠: As a team from #CharitéBerlin shows in #Science, thoughts in the human neocortex flow in one direction ⬆️, as opposed to the loops seen in mice 🔄. That makes processing information extra efficient. These discoveries could further the development of artificial neural networks.
As it turns out, Jupiters moon #Europa has substantially less oxygen than previously thought. Albeit, it still produces enough oxygen
in a 24 hour period
to keep approximately
one million humans breathing.
Some make nests inside seashells, others tote bubbles of air on their backs. The spiders that went back to water evolved lots of slick survival strategies.
Suddenly, biologists have hundreds of complete genome sequences of our feathered friends. That wealth of data is revolutionizing understanding of bird biology and evolution.
It covers everything from the history of scicomm to press releases, #SocialMedia, #science shows, risk communication, engaging with policy makers, language, you name it... Highly recommended!
Today, learn about the 32 U.S coastal cities, affecting up to 500,000 people, that are at an increased risk of experiencing one or more major flooding events in the next twenty years, due to land subsidence and sea-level rise. https://news.vt.edu/articles/2024/01/research-sinkingcoasts.html
The bloc aims to become the first carbon-neutral continent. A new policy called CBAM will assist its ambitions — and may persuade other countries to follow in its footsteps.
Ever wonder how Baleen whales (Blues, Greys, Humpbacks), the largest
and some of the most magnificent animals to ever roam the earth,
produce their highly complex communication sounds and whale songs?

In our quest to find what makes humans unique, we often compare ourselves with our closest relatives: the great apes.
But when it comes to understanding the quintessentially human capacity for language, scientists are finding that the most tantalizing clues lay farther afield.
Among the scattering of nonhuman vocal learners across the branches of the bush of life, the most impressive are birds — hands (wings?) down.
