Disclaimer: I still use #GitHub

You know, that massive hub of public and private software projects that is the de facto home of open source.

The place owned by the same corporation that just tried to sneak a total surveillance system into the most used operating system by end users and business on the planet.

A couple of years ago I showed that we could start replacing this with a truly #decentralised alternative. See: #p2pgit

The time has come to build this.

It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.

It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.

It's inescapable.

It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

It won't matter if you're a master expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.

If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.

I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."

I think I have a good feeling on what the response might be here on Mastodon, but with Microsoft pledging to improve security, and making Recall opt-in, will this change your perception of Windows 11?

@interfluidity and this is the crux of the matter, my friends.

"I don't care about recall - I don't use Windows."
"If you're concerned, switch to $ALT_OS and protect yourself."
"We Linux users retain our privacy!"

All true... until you interact with another person that uses Windows with enabled (which will be 95% of everyone you meet).

Microsoft does not Recall automatically

Looks like Microsoft will make Recall opt-in. Seemingly they needed user feedback to figure out that people might not like the idea of them taking a screenshots of their screens every 5 seconds or so.

Security experts also pointed out that this would be a security nightmare. Pretty obvious, really.

This is another example why it is clear Big Tech is not to be trusted to make the right decisions, even when they are staring them in the face.

Desperate to not loose out, they are moving quickly to not be left behind, running blindly ahead without thinking of the consequences.

It’s a start, but it does nothing to protect victims of domestic violence or people who’ve opted out but whose information is on the computers of people who’ve opted in.

MS Recall begs the question, “Who does this serve?”

Since Microsoft seems to not care about the impact that the + feature has, I am going back to as my daily driver. All my servers run on Debian or its derivatives, work servers run RedHat or Windows, but I have not used a Desktop Linux for quite a while as a daily driver. I've been playing with Debian 12 with Gnome for the past few days, and next I'll be playing with Fedora, which I have not used since the early 2000's. We'll see how fast I can catch up.

techviator,
@techviator@noc.social avatar

It seems is making important changes to that should improve its :

  1. Opt-in instead of opt-out.
  2. Windows Hello must be used to use Recall.
  3. Screenshots and database are encrypted and need Windows Hello authentication in order to open.

I'm still switching to as my primary OS and keep as a VM for some work applications, but it's good to see that MS is trying to make this controversial feature a bit more secure.

Who has sat there and went "oh yeah, I forgot what I was doing 5 mins ago on my pc and I absolutely cannot spend a few mins thinking about it or pressing the back button to remember" ???

it’ll be fascinating to read a hindsight analysis of the #recall debacle in 5 years. i think it represents a significant business failure, maybe a critical one. i know there’s a lot of undercurrents and dynamics at play, it’ll be a great case study down the road

kellogh,

i love #LLMs and all, but #ML has always had a more difficult security profile and LLMs even more so. lots of subtle issues, and conflict with business opportunities

but that means that if you want to “invest heavily in #AI”, you HAVE TO also invest heavily in security. they go hand in hand.

if #recall is showing cracks in microsoft’s security culture, you can probably use that information to make predictions about their long term health

#Windows' upcoming #Recall feature is enabled by default btw in the OOBE setup and CANNOT be disabled directly - you will need to disable it in the Settings app instead, afterwards.

I don't know if you'd trust #Microsoft to actually respect that setting either, wouldn't be the first and only setting on Windows that doesn't actually do anything you'd want it to (or not to) do.

OH and also - Microsoft stores all the Recall data in an #SQLite database in plaintext, so you KNOW it's secure and definitely not easy to steal away from you by anyone that gains physical or remote access to your device <3

Making Recall opt-in has, effectively, killed it.

Oh, it will still ship.

Folks who worked on it will move on to new features and the ownership will be transferred to the servicing devision (WSD).

After a while WSD will get fed up with the cost of maintaining yet another rarely used shell feature and will deprecate it. Either that or the shell team will rewrite everything again and drop it.

Wow, the fact it took everyone making a stink about Recall for them to do the right thing is telling! Microsoft should've known better than to be stupidly bold and feel self-assured about an invasive feature being on by default.

Still won't go back to Windows, as they might be sneaky as fuck about something else which compromises my system's security.

I'm happy on Ubuntu, so Microsoft can kick rocks for all I care. ROFL
