Quokka,

@mawsonbear one day I'll understand why we have quite a large city library. And a large state library, separate.

Here's the latest variant picture for Western Australia.

The XBB.1.5.* "Kraken" variant (20%) has continued to decline and has been overhauled by the XBB.1.9.* "Hyperion" clan (30%).

XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (11%) is growing a bit recently, but seems lower than in other Australian states.

The variant mix in WA continues to be uniquely chaotic, reflecting it's stituation as a global crossroads. Even WA residents who've been racking up regular reinfections are likely to meet globally obscure variants capable of overcoming their immunity.

The sample volumes seem representative up to May 2.

Every place has its season and for Western Australia it is definitely Autumn. The days are, for the most part, long and warm, the nights are cool. Autumn here is beautiful.

The 4 seasons of the Northern Hemisphere calendar only kind-of fit here, in the Nyoongar six season calendar April-May is Djeran (read more https://www.kooyarwongi.com.au/djeran-season-is-here/)

However you call it, it is still wonderful.

Apparently some weather models (ECMWF) are showing a chance of #snow in the #Perth hills in the next couple of days.

Somehow I don't see it happening, but it'll be awesome if it does.

I'm feeling it's time for another picture from Australia.
When I was last there, this enormous sculpture by Marcus Canning stood at the entrance to Fremantle WA. It weighs about 66 tonnes and is known as Containbow (for obvious reasons).
It's a popular and cheery piece, but I believe there are plans to move it to make way for a new road bridge across the Swan River.

Most amazing meal at Millbrook Winery in Jarrahdale yesterday. No Waste Monday is the day the chef creates a set menu out of that week's leftovers, and you get 4 courses (panna cotta with persimmon for desert not shown) of amazing food for $50. Veggies are grown at the winery, meat sourced from local farms and seafood is from local waters. #Perth

Here's the latest variant picture for Western Australia.

XBB.1.5 "Kraken" (21%) is the leading variant, but is declining. That is a relatively low frequency, reflecting the complex mix in WA.

There is some strong recent growth shown by the new XBB.2.3.2 variant (11%), descended from XBB "Gryphon".

Another growing variant is the new FK.1.1 (11%) - a newly classified descendant of CH.1.1 "Orthrus".

XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (7%) is growing steadily, but appears a bit slower.

The sample volumes seem representative up to April 17.

Here's the latest variant picture for Western Australia.

The XBB.1.9.* "Hyperion" clan (31%) is battling with XBB.1.5.* "Kraken" variant (23%) for dominance.

XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (20%) is growing quite rapidly. Be alert for conjunctivitis symptoms, which seem more common with that variant.

The variant mix in WA continues to be uniquely chaotic, reflecting it's situation as a global crossroads. Even WA residents who've been racking up regular reinfections are likely to meet globally obscure variants capable of overcoming their immunity.

The sample volumes seem representative up to May 12.

Very worrying headline for this part of the world. No injuries. Let's hope that as the story unfolds it turns out less dramatic than may first appear.

Today in #Perth was the #HBFRun Run for a Reason. First in the half marathon men's 70-79 category finished in 1:39:51, at a pace of 4:43min/km.

If those numbers don't mean much to you, take it from me that it is bloody impressive for someone who is at least 70 years old. Hats off to you sir!

"Minkeys" hockey for Miss 4 starts on Saturday. Very local which is nice.
And for those that don't know how popular hockey is here in WA, the already quite nice venue is about to get a $135 million upgrade - 10,000 seats if needed https://www.austadiums.com/news/1229/hockey-remains-in-perth-with-new-facility-to-be-built

I did not know it was that popular.
