Can we please not have the word „simply“ in NixOS manual or nixos.wiki? NixOS learning curve is super steep and it‘s frustrating when you start and you don‘t understand how to do things that are supposed to be simple #linux#nixos#documentation#newbie#frustration
So, looking for examples of how federated services interoperate with each other - I've joined a Pixelfed instance with my Mastadon mstdn.ca login and that seems to propagate, but I don't seem able to login to other services that way - Bookwyrm? PeerTube? Does ActivityPub connect them? Or is it usually only instances within a service? Is there a resource page for this I haven't found yet? #activitypub#fediverse#newbie
Hello world, I have been using (and am enjoying using) mastodon for a couple of days now but remain a little confused by some things. Many things, but... WELL how does other things in the fediverse like interact? I understand that different servers can passively "bleed" into each other through interaction, but that's just for mastodon. I've seen people advertise for things like Firefish or Calckey but what's the purpose of those? Isn't mastodon the same?
My #gay erotic story about Hermes and Dionysos is finally published wide! Get the tender (non-romantic) love story between the two gods at your favourite online retailer:
I hate Twitter but, to be honest, Mastodon feels a lot lonelier. I like learning, books, mental models, pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, tools, knots, DIY, EDC, productivity advice, coffee, beer, software development, Tolkien, rucking, soccer, chilly weather, etc. Where are my people at??
#Welcome! There are lots of folks here to build a new community.
I always recommend following @feditips and @feditips to discover all kinds of great things you can do in #Mastodon.
You will get more traffic if you follow accounts that you enjoy and if you use hashtags.
Hashtags are powerful here. Because there's no algorithm here shoving trolls and ads in your feed, the best way to get your toots noticed by others is to use hashtags.
You can even follow hashtags.
And you can edit posts! You might want to edit your toot to include hashtags like:
Hi everyone - just joined Mastodon for second time - think I picked the wrong server last time. Hoping to interact about health research & policy, dementia research, gerontology etc!!
Finally cracking open my Arduino learner's kit and getting started on the basics of learning how to program with it. Hoping to use it as the brain for my attempt at a bat animatronic. No promises that it'll be ready for halloween, but heck, Imma try anyway!
Just arrived here fleeing Elroy's dumpster fire. Looking to find open arms and open-minds who value: honesty, democracy, freedom of expression and good humor. Hoping to avoid RW lunacy, self-serving egos and disinformation. Gimme a follow and I'll follow back if we might share values. Thanks. #newbie
The first thing to know about Mastodon is that there is no algorithm that promotes certain posts or that imposes its idea of what it thinks you want to see in your timeline. The "algorithm" is people boosting posts they like or that they think their followers will be interested in. Here, posts fly on their merits and nothing else. If a post goes viral is because lots of people boosted it.
Given this, the best thing for a newcomer is to create a post that talks about yourself a bit. "Hi, I'm new here. I'm an entomologist, married, three kids. I like music and motorcycles." Or something to that effect, long or short. People who see the post will boost it into their follower pool, so more will see it, and so on. At the moment, you only have one follower (me), but that will grow.
The second good thing for a newcomer to do is to follow others. If anyone looks interesting, follow them. Many of them will follow back. This both gets your timeline going and gets you some followers.
The third important thing about Mastodon is that hashtagging is important. You find posts on topics by searching for hash tags. You can even follow has tags, which is really useful. So you could hash tag your hello post with #mastodon#newbie#newcomer#join
#Newbie? Hope this helps. When I first started using Mastodon seriously, I:
. Looked for/found some old friends from elsewhere.
. Looked at the public timeline occasionally on the lookout for interesting people and hashtags.
. Followed hashtags with content I liked. Some I stopped because they got too noisy, but they did fill out my sparse timeline - no regrets.
. Judiciously followed more people, many discovered from hashtagged posts.
. Used hashtags in my posts and always give images alt text.
I'll be honest, I've always tinkered with ubuntu and even older versions of linux (Anyone remember Mandrake? Yeah I'm old lol), I had even built my own HTPC at one point many many years ago....
Hey @knitting friends I am facing a new problem. #learner#Newbie I am #knitting my cardigan on metal old size 8 needles (4mm) and now the back has grown a lot. I am getting #pains in my hand and upper arm. I noticed and stopped last night but still sore today. Obviously I will take a break until it heals, but then what should I do? Would swapping to circulars help or should I rest my knitting on a table rather than my lap or is there a better solution?
A huge welcome to the #Newcomers - we hope you like it here! Follow (and unfollow) liberally, and you can use and follow #hashtags of things you're interested in - this helps people find and engage with others with similar interests. Use favourite to acknowledge you liked a post, use boost if you want to share the post with your followers, and use bookmark to keep an eye on a thread. Replying to yourself or others creates a thread. Holler if you need any help! #Newbie#HowTo
[Shower Thought] I was never "good" at Linux CLI, ChatGPT has helped tremendously
