Am enjoying how my #Mastodon timeline has really come alive these past 36 hours. Especially the #FamilyHistory and #genealogy community.
Maths too. And old friends. And new friends.
With good humour and kindness.
BREAKING: White terrorist and mass murderer Patrick Crusius sentenced today to 90 life sentences for killing at least 23 people (all Latinos) at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas in 2019. #ElPaso#Mastodon#Texas#BlackMastodon#BlackFriday
At this rate, they eclipse Twitter in mere weeks, and then the network effect turns negative against Twitter. So I expect everybody on Twitter to move to Threads in the next couple of months.
I’m sure it will also suck out some #mastodon users — after all, there is a promise of #activitypub.
So the #fediverse terrain has just shifted very considerably. How do we adjust and turn this to our advantage?
Second, the platform will continue, as all centrally owned social media platforms, to harvest #userdata and then use these often #private#data to advertise to you
Lastly, as many of you on #mastodon know: we don’t need yet another billionaire controlled social media platform. This is why I’ve killed all of my #Reddit and #Twitter accounts.
When you join any centrally-managed #socialmedia platform, you are bound by their terms and conditions, whatever they are and as they change over time.
There is only one real social media based solution to billionaire-controlled platforms: the #fediverse
And I’m so glad you’re here. Please: feel free to share this with your non Fedi friends.
Fifty years later Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” album remains his best ever. Some will say “Talking Book”, others “Music Of My Mind” or “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” or “Songs In The Key Of Life”—all excellent. No question it’s “Innervisions”, though.
It turns out that one can change a poll from radio buttons (single select) to check boxes (multi select) by clicking on the radio button icon next to a poll entry, when creating a poll.
Seeing someone on Twitter with over 100k followers trying #Threads, then saying #Twitter is the superior social media app & they aren't moving did make me chuckle.
We all make decisions in life and moving to Mastodon was easy for me, I had only 800 followers (probably many of those were bots or dead accounts), but I would hope it would still be seriously bothering me that I was staying put with the chaos over at Twitter and the treatment of the app creators and community.
The fact Anonymous isn’t on #Mastodon but is active on #Bluesky really is disappointing and makes me wonder are they the tech savants people claim or just overhyped. Their most recent Mastodon post was about creating an XMPP group when Matrix exists and is the go to was shocking to me personally.
Why of all places be on Bluesky and continue to remain there when they only JUST got 1 million downloads.
Est-ce que les blocages suivent les migrations d'instance ?
Imaginons que j'ai bloqué un compte et que ce dernier migre vers une autre instance : est-ce que je bloque toujours le compte migré ? #mastodon
It's been interesting to read the discussions about how Threads might impact us here in the Fediverse, a lot of seemingly good points I only barely understand, and most of it civil. But that said, I can't say I'm all that interested anymore about the the network itself.
I've found my place here and am not looking for anything else.
This is the place, too riff off the Mandalorian.
I've been on #mastodon for 2 years now. While I've searched for hashtags before, I didn't know you could follow hashtags. That is far more convenient ways to get content.
Definitely still happier here on #Mastodon. Over on #Threads I still see the same sheep mentality as Twittle on the new app and the usual engagement tricks that have been beaten to death. So far 4 out of 10. But at least no ApartheidClyde.
I LOVE getting blocked by #Mastoadmin for calling them out on their frivolous handling of user data. 🤣 universeodon is cute...70k users potentially doxxed by connecting with #Threads. If you don't want people from #Facebook or #instagram finding you on #Fediverse, you're the bad guy apparently🙄. #Mastodon
I may never go viral here, but I'm okay with that. Elsewhere, going viral felt like the end all, be all of #SocialMedia. Here, it's just a nice bonus, because look at all the cool people I've shared thoughts, ideas with along the way. I'm just me. If #Mastodon loves that, cool. If not, at least a few people enjoy what I have to say. At least I'm being seen. At least I can educate people, even if only in my little way, about being #Blind, #Accessibility and other little things.
I know that #Threads is going to just explode. My wife installed it and is already posting.. She would have never signed up for a Mastodon sever.. and that is fine too.
I think if #Meta follows through with #ActivityPub it will be great for #Mastodon. If you don't want to join #Threads you can still communicate with ppl that would never join #Mastodon. It also provides a gateway for ppl if they want to leave #Threads in the same way ppl left AOL for the wider Web.
Fediverse servers popping up on #I2P@i2p or #Tor@torproject corporate-free overlay networks when? Are there any technical barriers to this? (Friction in getting people to start adopting "dark nets" for regular use notwithstanding) #Mastodon#Fediverse And if you want to dig into it further, how immune to regulation would Fedi servers be on the open plains of the free web?
