: The shadow is not that of Europa but a second moon (Io), which is not in this frame. Europa is slightly smaller than Earth's Moon and is tidally locked. Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) is a vast cyclonic storm system about three times the size of Earth when Voyager flew by. Since 1979, the GRS has continuously shrunk, slowly changing its shape from an oval to a circle. It is now a little over the size of the Earth only. Credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech / Kevin M. Gill

Such extremes and basically so close by!

Space and everything in it is just amazingly incredible :blobhappy:

Waiting for [ ...] NASA's probe recently took images of the surface of , an icy moon of . And what a surprise! The crust has shifted, distorted, ...

So what happened? Are these changes the result of interactions with the vast oceanic area lying beneath Europa's surface?

More news in 2031, when ESA's probe, launched on April 14, 2023, (finally!) reaches the system : https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-juno-provides-high-definition-views-of-europas-icy-shell

Wicked smart scientists calculate how long volcanoes on Jupiter moon Io have been active. Measure relative abundance of 2 sulphur isotopes belched into the atmosphere then reprocessed as crust — bias toward heavy sulphur. Compare ratio to early solar system meteorites. https://www.science.org/content/podcast/very-volcanic-moon-and-better-protections-human-study-subjects

Jupiter in infrared from Gemini

In infrared, Jupiter lights up the night. Recently, astronomers at the Gemini North Observatory in Hawaii, USA, created some of the best infrared photos of Jupiter ever taken from Earth’s surface, pictured. Gemini was able to produce such a clear image using a technique called lucky imaging, by taking many images and combining only the clearest ones that, by chance, were taken when Earth's atmosphere was the most calm.

The so-called “great instability” event that sent gas giants careening through space until they settled into orbits occurred between 60 and 100 million years after the birth of the solar system. Migrating planets primarily Jupiter, it turns out, may have led to the formation of Earth’s moon. Live Science explains: https://flip.it/wWBTEy

New bus stations in #OutFly, giving you free public transportation to the most scenic destinations around #Jupiter.

Just look for the signature green 3-axis cross of StarTrans Cargo Services, register your trip with the customer service agent drone, activate your spacesuit's CryoFreeze program, and eventually, you will be picked up. Hopefully.

#PPOD: Io is the volcanic moon of Jupiter and is seen here in an image taken in 1979 by NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft. Loki Patera is Io's largest volcanic depression at 202 kilometers in diameter and contains an active volcanic lake. Io's volcanism results from the gravitational forces being applied to the tiny moon by Jupiter on one side and the larger Galilean moons on the other.
