We’re looking to buy a place in #Ireland (because renting here is nigh on impossible these days) so I approached a mortgage broker and they just got back to me with this gem:
“Bank of Ireland will not consider your mortgage application because you run a not-for-profit.”
How bloody lovely.
Congratulations on creating a system that rewards the worst of the worst and fucks over those striving to work for the common good. I, for one, won’t be shedding a tear should it burn to the ground.
Wix fires Irish employee for Gaza support, tells staff to “join a company initiative to create videos and creative campaigns”, to “support Israel’s narrative” … “show Westernity” in posts, as “unlike the Gazans, we look and live like Europeans and Americans”. It’s “very important to emphasise this in texts and images so that they feel close to us”
Ellen Odette Cuffe, Countess of Desart (née Bischoffsheim) was born on 1 September 1857. She was a London-born Jewish woman who was best known as an Irish politician Gaelicist (President of the Gaelic League for a time), and philanthropist in Ireland. She has been called '"the most important Jewish woman in Irish history". 1/2
When I become benevolent, glorious, dictator for life, of #Ireland, anyone using a speaker phone in a public place will be sent to work in the fucking calcium mines.
This made me laugh for hours. I still can't believe it. My work was blatantly ripped off. Normally that's not funny. But when it's the Gardaí doing it, all you can do is laugh.
My sign for County Wicklow from 9 years ago vs the new Garda sign on Howth head today. 😂 lads, seriously now. #plagiarism#whiteCollarCrime#intellectualProperty#design#graphicDesign#ireland
Thanks to @kd for highlighting this #Irish government survey on climate change.
Worth filling out, if only to counter the individualistic bias in the survey itself and leave comments.
I feel like they want answers like everyone should buy a new EV and install a wind turbine, rather than face the systemic changes like critically reducing car use that are necessary and making public transport/cycling better.
Interestingly – and given my increasing and yet still rather limited sample size – it seems radon levels are higher during rain.
(I got a real-time radon sensor a little while back to see what the levels are like in our 70-year-old rental house. Spoiler: they’re not great but they’re within Irish safety limits. Not that there’s any safe level of radon, from what I’ve read.)
I really don’t get why insect screens aren’t standard in European windows. While mosquitoes aren’t that common in #Ireland, we are beginning to see a lot more in recent years certainly where I am.
They’re a very common annoyance on the continent, yet mostly people seem to rely on plug-in chemical repellents.
Seems like a lot of unnecessary insecticides being vaporised into the air -has to have an impact on other, friendlier insects too.
Here’s a fine example of a #mosquito in my kitchen in Cork

¹ This, in and of itself, is a bloody miracle these days, apparently, and only happened because it’s a new practice that’s just opening up.
