The local #BCForestry research centre is only a few minutes from our home. Apparently they had a plant sale recently. My youngest brother told me they were selling daphne seedlings. DA FUQ! Daphne is super #invasive & many of us longtime nature stewards & guardians have been trying to remove it from local forests, parks & public greenspaces for over 2 decades! Yet, our shit #BCgovernment thinks it's OK to sell them to unaware public?!? I'll post pic of a daphne #plants they tried selling soon.
I was planning to remove my non-native bushes from my yard and give them to a neighbor this weekend, but now I have to question doing that if it's possible that would help the #invasive#worms spread.
But apparently the leaves contain hydrogen #cyanide gas?! Wikipedia cites a source that says "the cyanide is easily sidestepped by chopping up the plant, which releases most of the gas in a few minutes. Soaking and cooking it also reduces the cyanide to negligible levels".
It's always disappointing to see invasive lionfish on Caribbean dive sites, as they devour the local populations and have few predators. That said, they are visually interesting, with so many different colors and textures warning predators about the venomous spines.
The #OBWB has been stepping up its calls for action after last Sept’s announcement of quagga mussels in the Idaho’s #SnakeRiver, a tributary to the #ColumbiaRiver which connects to the #Okanagan, and only an 11hrs drive to the BC & Alberta border. The closest infestation prior to this finding was in Manitoba.
"Rather than just ripping out the #invasive species, Avery’s team has designed a clever solution: replacing non-native phragmites with wild rice. The plant’s Anishinaabemowin name, manoomin, means the good seed, and it is loaded with cultural and nutritional significance."
But what's a little #crime against #nature between friends?
On a more serious note, this an #invasive and extremely unwelcome #species. If you spot one in your #electronics#workshop, kill it with fire, and report the incident to the #IEC.
(It's also kind of the antonym of dead-bug circuit construction, which is sort of apt)
Is this allium vineale / wild garlic? Allium oleraceum / field garlic? Or Allium schoenoprasum / #chives?
The last option, chives, is #native to the USA and #PA; the others aren't. I'm growing a native plant garden, so if it's #invasive / introduced, I'll evict it.
When I picked a leaf off the specimen growing out of the wall, it smelled faintly of green #onions, so I'm inclined to believe it is in the onion family.
I saw this on the outskirts of #mumbai#india, today. Someone on #inaturalist suggested these were #yellowcrazyants . This is very disturbing, as these #ants are one of the worst #invasivespecies in the world. To make matters worse, the place where I saw them is a diverse and vibrant #wetland. Birds from all over the world migrate here.
Could someone help confirm if Yellow Crazy Ants native to India?
Quote: "We show that half of the #urban areas in Europe are already suitable and that #climate#warming expected under current trends will favor the expansion of this #invasive#ant."
@IPBES
What is the most ethical way to dispose of #invasive (but decorative) #plants?
I have some big blue lilyturf / #Liriope muscari that I want to replace with native plants in my garden. (It's native to East Asia, not Philly.)
I could give it away, but that means encouraging other people to plant invasive species. On the other hand, if I do not give it away, that means people who want this plant will pay nurseries to grow it instead of native plants. Is composting it the best option?
Really important #paper in @Nature which includes @envagency#invertebrate monitoring data along with European datasets showing that recovery of #freshwater invertebrates has come to a halt since 2010
