This year the continent of #Africa is hosting the #IAU General Assembly that takes place every 3 years, for the first time in the IAU's history. It seems only right that an African astronomer should attend this historic event, and #astronomy needs more African astronomers. If you feel the same, please consider contributing to the IAU African Astronomer Travel Fund: https://lsstdiscoveryalliance.org/donate/iau-african-travel-fund/
"#SpaceX satellites threaten to hide asteroids that pose danger to humanity
The International Astronomical Union demands that urgent action be taken against the uncontrolled proliferation of these devices. #Starlink satellites make it difficult to search for objects at risk of impacting the Earth"
The International Astronomical Union (#IAU) are hosting an #astrophotography gallery in #VR! The event is on May 27 from 11am - 12:30pm UTC and May 28 from 8pm - 9:30pm UTC, and showcases astronomical photographs captured with a smartphone 📱🌌
The event is being held in spatial.io, which is accessible from a VR headset (Quest), or just from your computer browser (i.e. no headset needed).

Here is a localization of this image on a broader map, along with names from the official #IAU nomenclature. The center of the image is at approx. 30°S, 153°W.
Not close to any #MarsTrilogy toponyms that I have found so far, so the second image places it in an even broader frame, along with the other images we've seen recently, and some of the well known places from #KSR's #SciFi novels.
The IAU Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) is excited to announce the call for proposals for the Teacher Training Program (TTP) 2024 (download the poster in pdf). This offers the National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs) an opportunity to seek financial support for organising impactful teacher training and development workshops in their respective countries or regions. This grant encourages an active collaboration among a NAEC team member, a local teacher, and, where feasible, an astronomer. This team will work together to create and conduct a teacher workshop tailored to their specific preferences, where teachers will be empowered with the astronomy knowledge and skills that they could use in their classrooms.
We invite and encourage anyone working in astronomy education together with their NAECs to submit proposals for financial support of up to 2000 Euros, to organise and run the teacher training and development workshop in 2024.
Collaboration with a NAEC team member is a prerequisite for submitting proposals, teachers and/or astronomers interested in leading a workshop are encouraged to connect with a NAEC in their country for potential collaboration.
The OAE currently has NAECs in approximately 120 countries worldwide. For TTPs proposed from India, the Associate NAECs will be treated on par with the NAECs.
In the previous year, OAE proudly supported 21 TTP workshops worldwide, and we […]

#TIL I learned that the #asteroid (3043) San Diego received its name from the International Astronomical Union in 1984 "in appreciation of the city council's efforts to reduce the local light pollution."
Virtual registration for #IAU Symposium 385 on #astronomy and satellite constellations is closing on Monday, 17th September. Please consider attending this informative and dynamic event!
The #IAU Center for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference expresses concern about the recently launched prototype #BlueWalker 3 satellite’s impact on astronomy. New measurements reveal that this low Earth orbiting satellite is now one of the brightest objects in the night sky, outshining all but the brightest stars. In addition, the satellite’s use of terrestrial radio frequencies poses a new challenge to radio astronomy: https://www.iau.org/news/pressreleases/detail/iau2211/
What is this #podcast about?
All things #constellations! Each month we explore the #astronomy and #myths of one of the #IAU constellations. We talk about cool #space stuff (with a bias toward #BlackHoles & #exoplanets) as well as analyzing & retelling the myths of the night sky (a segment we like to call ret-con…stellations)
