I got some interesting feedback after my :

"The book isn't intended to provide hard technical solutions (...)"

That's not my criticism, though! I expect to provide signposts and narratives about the future, not blueprints.

"The Ministry..." refuses to acknowledge / imagine any kind of agency from the . That is not technology. That's a political stance.

Hm, those would be the Swiss road-builders was talking about. The thing is, this is a tourist destination and has to be ready by the time the season opens in '29. We don't want all those Optimuses (Optimos?) stumbling around those rocks and breaking a neck or something.

🤔 Come to think of it, maybe we should open a spare parts store with all those robotic corpses?

Refining my criticism of , I think I arrived at the core of what bothers me:

It's relatively easy to say whether science fiction is hard or soft when it comes to physical technology, but much harder when it comes to social ones.

The Ministry uses blockchain and a few other buzzword techs the same way other books use nanorobots: they magically solve complex problems. Here: social ones.

Few readers can spot that outright.

this epic, spanning 600 years (and 772 pages!) after the total depopulation of Europe by the Plague. The story is essentially 10 short stories / novellas across this time, linked by the reincarnation of characters. It did occasionally feel like work - KSR loves characters who lecture, although he usuallly writes about intellectuals for whom this makes sense - but overall I find it rewarding and rich. @bookstodon

The Lost Cause is my next novel. It's about the climate emergency. It's hopeful. $LibraryJournal called it "a message hope in a near-future that looks increasingly bleak." As with every other one of my books refuses to sell the audiobook, so I made my own, and I'm pre-selling it on :

read the book and said, "Along with the rush of adrenaline I felt a solid surge of hope. May it go like this." That's perfect, because the book is a ride. It's not a kumbaya tale of a possible better world: it's a post-cyberpunk tale of high-tech guerrilla and meme warfare, climate tech and bad climate tech, wildcat prefab urban infill, and far-right militas who adapt to a ban on assault-rifles by switching to super-soakers full of hydrochloric acid.

The second decade of the 21st century is truly a bounteous time. My backyard has produced a bumper crop of an invasive species of mosquito that is genuinely innovative: rather than confining itself to biting in the dusk and dawn golden hours, these stinging clouds of flying vampires bite at every hour that God sends:

  2. Everfair by Nisi Shawl (2016) - of armed resistance against King Leopold II in the late 1800s. Love the premise, but not loving the detached prose. 1/🧵
