In Slate, I wrote about yet another problem due to car bloat:

Researchers found that SUVs and pickups have grown so huge that they can destroy highway guardrails.

Taxpayers are on the hook for fixes that could cost billions.

Add it to the list of societal challenges worsened by oversized cars (pedestrian deaths, climate change, unaffordable mobility, highway erosion...).

@davidzipper Now, what if road authorities would explicitly quantify this and impose an extra tax on those tanks? It's just like a phone subscription, more bandwidth=higher cost. If you're gonna use more of the road, you pay more. See it as an upgrade.

Btw don't forget about wear and tear. Road damage increases by .ass increase to the power of four

I just want to make clear to everyone that the issue is gigantic cars, NOT electric cars.

I bought a lovely, used Kia Soul EV two years ago that seats 5, can practically hold a sheet of plywood if the back seats are folded down, & has a curb weight of only 3,289 lbs. It's plenty big for most use cases.

Don't demonize electric cars. Also, demand carmakers build smaller EVs & human-sized trucks (they used to). And that your elected officials better fund public transit.

California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike wants input from all 58 CA counties. Especially needed: feedback from people who bike or walk in #Fresno, #Kern, #SanBernardino, #SanJoaquin, #Solano, #Tulare, and #Ventura counties.

https://bikemonterey.org/complete-streets-in-california-survey-on-state-controlled-roads.html

"Almost every California community has a state highway that doubles as a local street. These are often the most dangerous roads, because the California Department: of Transportation / Caltrans has historically prioritized moving cars quickly over the safety of people #biking and #walking.

"CalBike is seeking input from people who use these local streets to help create a report on the safety of Caltrans-controlled #roadways. Please fill out CalBike's survey." https://form.jotform.com/CalBikeCoalition/completestreets

Why putting #solarpanels beside #highways is a no-brainer!
#California could generate enough #electricity to power 270,000 homes by putting solar panels in the empty land next to highway interchanges in just 3 Southern California counties. There is a lot of “dead” space between highways, which is currently not used for much of anything. It’s not a usable space for wildlife, either, due to the proximity of so many cars. These locations are often near #transmissionlines

Dance that road away, Berlin!

I wonder what it looked like when Amsterdammers managed to keep out the construction of a major highway through their city, all those decades ago.

Now, the city core is nearly car-free.

They must have one of the best public transport networks in Europe and the easiest to use and access. You simply don’t need a car there.

Antiabortion advocates are targeting regions along interstates and in areas with airports, with the goal of blocking off the main arteries out of Texas and keeping #pregnant #women hemmed within the confines of their #antiabortion state.

These provisions have already passed in two counties and two cities, creating legal risk for those traveling on major #highways including Interstate 20 and Route 84, which head toward New Mexico, where abortion remains legal and new clinics have opened to accommodate Texas women.

Several more jurisdictions are expected to vote on the measure in the coming weeks
