Miami to Key West.
The Overseas Highway was originally Built as a railway and opened in 1912. this is now a highway for vehicles.
113 miles across 44 islands and 42 bridges.
Quite an engineering achievement.
@davidzipper Now, what if road authorities would explicitly quantify this and impose an extra tax on those tanks? It's just like a phone subscription, more bandwidth=higher cost. If you're gonna use more of the road, you pay more. See it as an upgrade.
Btw don't forget about wear and tear. Road damage increases by .ass increase to the power of four
@davidzipper
I just want to make clear to everyone that the issue is gigantic cars, NOT electric cars.
I bought a lovely, used Kia Soul EV two years ago that seats 5, can practically hold a sheet of plywood if the back seats are folded down, & has a curb weight of only 3,289 lbs. It's plenty big for most use cases.
Don't demonize electric cars. Also, demand carmakers build smaller EVs & human-sized trucks (they used to). And that your elected officials better fund public transit. @eheisman
PSA: Caltrans just advised this afternoon that the 101 northbound exit to Highway 23 will be closed from 8 pm TONIGHT through 6 am tomorrow morning for asphalt dike repair work. There will be a marked detour via Rancho Road.
"Almost every California community has a state highway that doubles as a local street. These are often the most dangerous roads, because the California Department: of Transportation / Caltrans has historically prioritized moving cars quickly over the safety of people #biking and #walking.
"The highway would bring extreme noise and pollution to the city. Honestly this is going to harm everybody. It's a nonsense project no matter how you look at it."
@TheWarOnCars Berlin, of all places!
They must have one of the best public transport networks in Europe and the easiest to use and access. You simply don’t need a car there.
Antiabortion advocates are targeting regions along interstates and in areas with airports, with the goal of blocking off the main arteries out of Texas and keeping #pregnant#women hemmed within the confines of their #antiabortion state.
These provisions have already passed in two counties and two cities, creating legal risk for those traveling on major #highways including Interstate 20 and Route 84, which head toward New Mexico, where abortion remains legal and new clinics have opened to accommodate Texas women.
Several more jurisdictions are expected to vote on the measure in the coming weeks
