The Bombay High Court on Tuesday wondered why the amendment to Information Technology Rules, 2021 providing for a government Fact Check Unit (FCU) is required when the FCU cannot compel social media platforms to take down content flagged as false, fake, or misleading.
If you’re going to interview Donald Trump, you had better be prepared to fact check him in real time. Our media does a terrible job of allowing him to spew falsehoods and spread conspiracies without calling him out on them. This is not the time to platform Trump like he is some regular politician. He is an existential threat to our democracy, including to institutions such as the free press. Do better.
@georgetakei#factchecking would in fact be a complete communications disaster for the Opposition. Since 2016, everyone has been saying #Trump has ushered in the #PostTruth era. He has shaped a culture where truth is inconsequential. Truth is not a social connector, a hallmark of character or leadership anymore. What matters are emotions, ideally reptilian ones (fear, anger, adoration). He defines the rules of the game. Either you beat him at his own game, or you are out.
