I finally got around to getting off of Substack and I just published my weekly list of #CleanEnergy, #Climate, and #Sustainability Jobs on Ghost for the first time. Happy to move to a platform that doesn’t directly support nazis.

Check the jobs out and share with a friend. #CleanEnergyJobs #ClimateJobs #SustainabilityJobs #ESG #ESGJobs #EnergyTransition https://edscleanenergysustainabilityjobs.com/eds-clean-energy-sustainability-jobs-list-05-12-24-2/?trk=feed_main-feed-card_feed-article-content

One major climate message that we've really got to elevate above all others is that addressing global warming is way, way, way, way less expensive than ignoring it!

The cost of solar power has dropped around 90% over the past decade, and battery storage costs dropped 85% during the same period.

New power lines are a big deal for renewable energy. More grid interconnection means areas where it's sunny or windy can supply more juice to other areas, cutting back on the tragedy of curtailment. Also more resilience generally. https://www.energy.gov/articles/biden-harris-administration-announces-initial-list-high-priority-areas-accelerated #EnergyTransition #Renewables

I despair that Canadian first nations might put equity into unconventional nuclear. They are being poorly advised.

Batteries are growing on the grid to handle evening power use surges when solar peters out. California just hit 7GW out of 10GW capacity. Our house is battery powered from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will be part of a virtual power plant soon.

Today batteries help with daily peak shaving; longer gaps in solar/wind production are harder. #FusionEnergy could help with that but is only one part of the overall solution. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/07/climate/battery-electricity-solar-california-texas.html

Because methane is a potent greenhouse gas, the climate is a good reason to replace your gas stove with an induction cooktop. But health risks could be even more motivating. Pollution reaches bedrooms. Asthma and death rates rise. And I bet you don't use your fume hood much.

Really interesting discussion of China's green/sustainable financing mechanisms (especially relative to the IRA In the US). Favorable financing for things you want, unfavorable for the things you don't. Financially it's a lot like a tax, but it's implemented by a different institution and paid far away from consumers. You can see how it might be politically different from a tax.

In July 2022, the price of a used Tesla Model Y (2021 model year) was $71,000. Today, it’s $32,000, reports Edmunds. Most remarkably, a used Tesla Model 3 is now cheaper than the average used gasoline vehicle.

Because of sophisticated cooling hardware and management software, most batteries are expected to outlive their car. Replacing the battery is unlikely to pay the full price of $6,500 to $20,000 cost. Warranty policies generally cover batteries when they fall below 75% of original capacity

Another periodic reminder that if you aren't campaigning to help get Joe Biden reelected than you're a climate science denier.

Because of Joe Biden's success towards decarbonizing the U.S. economy the first sodium ion battery factory in America opened in Michigan on Monday.

Natron's sodium-ion batteries have an enormous cycle life, practical power density, excellent safety and super-fast charging, without using any lithium.

Autarky in the USA!*

*Except if you are getting your #solar cells from Korea.

Given that we make exactly zero solar cells in the United States at present, the latest solar trade case seems to have less to do with protecting U.S. manufacturing and more to do with QCells and First Solar shutting their competitors - including other American manufacturers - out of the market.

And every time we do this, it incrementally slows the #energytransition.

Brilliant article on the challenges facing transition to renewables, and why its unlikely

"while the cost of renewable power is now lower than that of fossil fuels, renewables are not a profitable business. The particularities of the .. market structure are the causal factors here... Making sure that capital gets its pound of flesh has crippled the country."

Continuing the theme - why despite hitting #Pakistan's rooftop #solar target half a decade early the Gov is being forced to somehow put brakes on the renewables transition.

" this rapid growth in rooftop solar is creating costs that have to be passed on to poorer segments of the population"
