OK so this is cool.

Having known a few people in my teens and 20s who lived in their VW buses, I've always considered these to be a more practical vehicle than most sedans (and certainly compared to SUVs). And now they are going electric!

Autarky in the USA!*

*Except if you are getting your #solar cells from Korea.

Given that we make exactly zero solar cells in the United States at present, the latest solar trade case seems to have less to do with protecting U.S. manufacturing and more to do with QCells and First Solar shutting their competitors - including other American manufacturers - out of the market.

And every time we do this, it incrementally slows the #energytransition.

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/04/24/u-s-solar-manufacturers-petitions-southeast-asia-00153994

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

@GreenFire Yes, but this case is about solar cells, not modules (which other than poly is all we make).

And while I think it will drive some solar cell manufacturing in either the USA or third countries, it will also slow deployment this year. We don't have any more years to screw around like this.

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

@GreenFire

Also: the cost of modules are between 25-30% of the cost of a utility-scale solar power plant, and 10-15% of the cost of a residential solar installation.

But many projects operate on tight margins, and AD/CVD cannot be predicted (rates are set 2 years later). So it really throws off project economics and will cause projects to be cancelled.

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

@GreenFire This one isn't Yellen, it's Raimondo's Department of Commerce. But Raimondo isn't really in charge; these AD/CVD investigations are very rules-based.

Problem is, the rules are set up to protect U.S. companies and explicitly do not consider the common good for our country or our climate.

The latest by @dariaphoebe and I for #Providence Journal about why building infrastructure for safe, efficient non-car transportation is not a nice-to-have, but a must-have for building the density we need to combat the #housingcrisis.

Also critical to combat the #climatecrisis, BTW.

Proud to have my Yes to Wind sign, courtesy of Climate Action #rhodeisland, in my front yard!

This is the direction that the #climate movement needs to move in: to proactive solutions, not just problems; to being for things like #offshorewind as the necessary and urgent solution to the #climatecrisis.

Explanation of past barriers to widespread V2G, and how the new SAE standard J3068 solves most of them. Canary media makes the technology and policy issues readable. The world needs storage for a mostly- #renewable grid, and #V2G from #EV makes storage 1/10 the cost of purpose-built batteries.

This weekend I took a trip in my and my partner's new Chevy Bolt #EV to go hiking in Western Massachusetts. This involved stopping at an Electrify America charger in Springfield, MA, where two of the four chargers did not work (the app said 3 worked).

We spent about an hour waiting in line for a charger to open up; we would have gone elsewhere were there other fast-chargers anywhere near.

This is when I realized that for many Americans, the existing charging network still is not up to par./1

In addition to the thousands of children killed and families ripped apart, children losing their limbs is another result of the Israeli military's bombing of civilian areas in Gaza.

This is being done with a military that the United States helped build and continues to support with our tax dollars.

And if you object too loudly, AIPAC and its allies will come after you as an anti-semite. They may even cost you your job.

This is beyond shameful and wrong.

I've been researching and writing about energy matters for nearly 15 years now, so I'm used to finding the data that I'm looking for pretty quickly.

But this week I set out to try to get a sense of the average anticipated monthly capacity factors for #offshorewind off the coast of New England, and so far I've been frustrated.

I figure average monthly wind speeds would be a good proxy, but I haven't been able to find those either.

#EnergyMastodon - any suggestions?

This is really screwed up.

I am starting to think that the biggest reason why we can't get the United States to stop funding the Israeli military is these sort of campaigns within the United States, aimed at anyone who critizes Israel.

I've realized over the past 24 hours just how many of my fellow Americans do not know about the millions of violent deaths than #Kissinger was responsible for, across the world.

And that is reinforced by the fawning tributes played by our mainstream media.

This, and @theintercept's excellent articles are some of the few places that you will read about this man's #warcrimes this week - while outlets like Reuters continue to gaslight us.

Today our local daily carried Urbanist Networks' response to the Department of Transportation's revised Carbon Reduction Strategy.

tl;dr: While there are improvements, it's still nowhere near where it needs to be. Response by @shadow and I.

I'm sure many other states are going through the same thing right now.

Today I sent the following message to RI Senator Jack Reed:

"As your constituent, I want to state my strong opposition to further U.S. military aid and assistance to Israel until it stops the illegal massacre of civilians in #Gaza. The attacks by Hamas were horrible, and Israel has a right to defend its people from such violence. But the way that is has chosen to do so - by large-scale bombing of civilians areas and convoys of fleeing residents - is not defense...

/1

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

...It is simply a grotesque revenge being taken on civilians, including the thousands of children who have been murdered by the Israeli military.

These attacks on civilian areas and civilians are war crimes.

I further object to your statements that the United States stands with Israel. They do not represent me as your constituent, and your silence on the war crimes committed by the Israeli military is immoral and repellant." /2

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

I know sending an email isn't much. I frankly don't know what else to do. But I do think that it is important for we Americans - Jewish or not - to stand up and tell our members of Congress that we do not support further military aid to the criminal Israeli military machine. /3/end

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

PS Sent a similar message to RI Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, but had to first thank him for his climate leadership - his blind spot for state politics notwithstanding.

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

Update: I got a canned message back from Senator Jack Reed, expressing support for Israel. Apparently not even his staffers bother to read the messages sent to him.

Here’s to hoping he has a decent challenger in the next primary.

croselund,
@croselund@mastodon.energy avatar

Interestingly, I got a second response from Reed on November 1. Now he is expressing concern about civilian casualties and stating that "how Israel conducts this war matters."

The pressure from activists is working.
