Checking out the listed web / desktop #apps for #Mastodon most of them are really underwhelming. They even fail to describe on why one should use them. I didn't find a single desktop app which was worth installing, just from the information provided on their webpage. Multiaccount usage is irrelevant to me, for now.
With the #webapps I am now briefly trying out #phanpy#tooty#statuzer#trunksapp#elk and #mastodeck
#Chautauqua, #Cowley#Elk, #Montgomery, #Neosho and #Wilson, #Kansas are also under a #FlashFlood warning until 3:00 AM CDT. Flash flooding can be as if not more deadly than a #tornado so please take care if you are in an area in danger of flooding - do not attempt to travel unless you're evacuating or seeking higher ground. Cars are particularly susceptible to being swept away in floods!
"In his life, Bob brought a sense of awe and wonder to many. His death has prompted a much-needed conversation about how humans and elk can share the same home. Many more elk will die on our roads this year. None will be as famous as Bob, but each one will be a life lost, and endanger human lives in the process." —Emma Gilchrist for @thenarwhal
This is a photo of Bob, in 2016, on Christmas eve day. He visited our neighbours, across the road - at their holidays sharing table with Santa.
Our rental home is in the background.
After the disruption from the nightly build on Monday, I began experimenting with both @phanpy and @elk, alternate Web interfaces for Mastodon.
While #Elk is quite nice with always-available mouse-based back navigation, it doesn't seem to support either multi-column views or auto-refreshing timelines.
So, #Phanpy is a much better fit for my use case. However, it suffers the same limitation sorting notifications as the current unfixed nightly build, i.e. no quick-access filter bar.
If someone could try to takle this bug, I would highly appreciate that.
If you want to make a pair-programming session with me killing this bug, ping me on https://chat.elk.zone/
I'm planning to write an updated homelab guide on my blog this year but I think I'm about to rebuild some parts for a new purpose 😅
It might be time to try out OpenCTI given what I do in my lab should be representative of what I do during < dayjob >. That also means I need to tear down Wazuh and configure an ELK stack instead (resource constraint). #Homelab#ELK#CTI#ThreatIntel#elasticsearch
phanpy.social is cool, very well-designed, but after trying it for a couple days I still think I prefer Elk. Phanpy is just too slow. Every action has several seconds of lag, especially after scrolling for a while. And this makes it completely unusable on mobile.
I wonder if this is related to their tech stacks. Phanpy uses Preact, Elk uses Vue. React sites always feel slow. I'm not very familiar with Vue, but this is a point in favor of it. Elk always feels snappy.
The two main microblogging families are Mastodon and Misskey (with all their respective forks). If you really prefer the former you should try the MozillaSocial instance. The backend is a fork of Mastodon and the frontend is a fork of Elk.
Does anyone know of a #Mastodon web app that allows for both a) creating hashtag groups and b) following Instances other than my own? Basically, adding some of the killer features of @IceCubesApp but in web app I can use on multiple Windows desktops.
I am using @elk and I really love it but just wanted to explore some more. Or perhaps Elk might be looking to add those in the future?
#elk
