My biggest annoyance with is that it does not use as the default provider when searching for place names. Is there a that uses by default?

I see that #duckduckgo now has its own browser. Is anyone else trying it out? #privacy I am pretty happy with #firefox but duckduckgo is my default search engine and so I thought it is worth comparing.

Tutanota for the win.

All Gmail is forwarded to DuckDuckGo which is then forwarded to Tutanota.

Set Google to delete emails after forwarding to DuckDuckGo, so Gmail will take up no space while I make the transition.

Of course, going forward I will give out only my DuckDuckGo email which will scrub my trackers. Additionally, I learned DuckDuckGo added a BLOCK list, which means, I can DuckDuckGo as an email firewall. 👍

My and experiment is going well. But email feels like a bigger commitment along this path. I looked at the usual suspects like Proton, Mailfence, Fastmail, etc. I also ran across (https://disroot.org). This is much more than just email! They offer and all sorts of other stuff. A group of loosely aggregated open source stuff, and feels less seamless as a result. But definitely interesting. Anyone have any experience with them?

Decided to try @Mojeek as my default #SearchEngine (switching from #DuckDuckGo). I like that they have their own crawler, instead of just using #Microsoft's results. Let's see how this goes...

This is an old BBC News piece on data mining. Let's put it in context. My VPN has, in the past seven days, blocked nearly 40,000 tracking attempts by data miners embedded in the BBC News app on my Android phone. Forty thousand, and I'm paying for the data throughput.

"EU's protect users, harmful content, algorithms

⭕Want to talk to friends? Use not MS Skype
⭕Want to text/send files to friends? Use Telegram, not Meta WhatsApp
⭕Want to read/share info? Use Mastodon, not X or Meta
⭕Want to search info? Use not Bing, Google

Maybe try to use the alternative platforms, Mastodon and Telegram.

For y'all who use #Strava (we don't), here's a heads-up we rec'd via #DuckDuckGo newsletter.

"Researchers found that... Strava's heatmap feature, which was introduced to 'anonymously aggregate users' outdoor activity (#running, #cycling, etc.) to help identify common trails and #exercise hotspots...[and]... provide a 'social' aspect to physical activity, can be 'de-anonymized' to identify people's home addresses... with a 37.5% accuracy rate."

Trying out #DuckDuckGo as the default search engine in Firefox. Pretty good for general searches, but not very good for doing any searches against the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission website, which is something I do regularly. ☹️

Adventure today trying to make #DuckDuckGo my default search in #Firefox. All suggestions I found on web didn't work, incl. DuckDuckGo’s own Firefox extension or the service on Mycroft.org. I had to discover that search engines are stored in search.json.mozlz4 which is compressed using a special format instead of standard gz. It contained entries for DuckDuckGo and others, but they were marked hidden. Apparently Firefox ignores you when you try to install known-but-hidden search engines.
